Everything Coming to Netflix August 2015
The heat of August will set upon us soon, and with it the desire to stay indoors, waist immense amount of dollars on air conditioning and resent the sun for existing. Of course, it’s a certain streaming service’s sincere hope that you’ll do all that while watching TV shows and movies delivered right to the ominous box in your living room.
July isn’t quite done with its releases, the most exciting of which yet to hit (Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, July 31). That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t prepare for August, though, since camp only ever lasts so long.
The full list is below. First, here are a couple of highlights derived from a completely biased and certainly unworthy perspective. Feel free to skip on past, you elitist.
The Hurt Locker
In The Hurt Locker, following the tragically realistic exploits of an American bomb disposal team in the midst of the Iraq war, director Kathryn Bigelow leads Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty through a film both resonant and revealing for a generation of Americans consistently draped in a jingoistic lens. In other words, it’s the anti-American Sniper in the best way possible. It also opened up the doors for Bigelow to tackle Zero Dark Thirty and Renner to trade his assault rifle for a bow.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
Steve Carell and Keira Knightley find unlikely love during, literally, the last days of humanity’s tenure on planet Earth. The film opens with the horrifying news that an asteroid is most definitely going kill everyone on earth, Carell’s wife sprinting away from him as fast as she can. Stranger still: it’s a romantic comedy that pops entertainingly from drug-infused orgy parties to the sentimentality of existing at all. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World hit at a good time. As the films around it trumpeted the dire consequences of screwing up our world, this one figured the comedy of the situation was more worthwhile.
Lord of War
Nicolas Cage, directed by Gattaca’s Andrew Niccol, is an arms dealer risen from the small-time to the global stage, now hunted by authorities and confronted constantly by the morality of his business. The indefinitely underrated Ethan Hawke and underrated-until-recently Jared Leto help things along in a film trying to balance a strong message with loathsome people. If anything, it gave us one of the best posters in history:
Here’s everything else, including official upload dates for the above three films. It’s a bit of a weak month for Netflix, lacking any exciting originals or truly good “gets” for the service. Still, The Hurt Locker is a multi-Academy Award-winning movie, including a win for film of the year. Did I forget to mention that?
