Every New TV Show and Movie Coming to Netflix in September 2015

By on September 1, 2015

It’s been a bit of a dry summer for Netflix, strangely mirroring the antiquated scheduling of traditional TV. Do people even go outside anymore? Is there an outside anymore? In any case, September brings with it a nice little harvest for the winter, bundles of TV shows and movies that should tide the masses until live TV kicks into high gear. As always, let’s start with a few highlights. The entire Netflix in September 2015 list with accompanying release dates can be found below.

Person of Interest

It’s a CBS crime procedural with a unique twist! On paper, Person of Interest sounded like another excuse for CBS to ham it up. Reese (Jim Caviezal), a well-dressed spook, and Finch (Michael Emerson), a billionaire genius software guy, form an unlikely alliance to save the people a near-future mega-machine calculates are likely to come into fatal danger sometime soon. Sounds like a hackjob, yes, but the team behind it quickly established a wildly compelling through-line, casting Finch’s “Machine” as a nebulous artificial intelligence and gladly steamrolling into all the philosophical and moral quandaries attatched to handing over people’s safety to the near-omnipresent mind of a computer. If that’s not enough, later seasons manage to take those questions to previously unconsidered dilemmas, which I wont go into for fear of spoilers. Gluing it all together are surprisingly worthwhile characters both well-written and well-acted.

The first three seasons hit on the first of the month with the fourth later on in September. It’s all a lead up to the final and fifth season to air on CBS this year.

Moonrise Kingdom

Moonrise Kingdom is the Wes Anderson movie that came right before 2014’s ultimate, Oscar-adorned Wes Anderson movie, The Grand Budapest Hotel. What Moonrise Kingdom lacks in the bombast of the later film, it more than makes up for in the investigation of young and old minds alike, all trapped or freed on a New England island town in the summer of 1965. Of course, it’s a Wes Anderson film, so expect weirdness, symmetry and vocalized lists. And Bill Murray. He’s there too.

Philomena

Frankly, it’s a slightly above average Oscar-bait kind of deal starring Steve Coogan and Judi Dench, but in perusing the reviews of Philomena on Metacritic, I found this quote pulled directly from the lowest rating for the film, from New York Post’s Kyle Smith: “With Philomena, British producer-writer-star Steve Coogan and director Stephen Frears hit double blackjack, finding a true-life tale that would enable them to simultaneously attack Catholics and Republicans. There’s no other purpose to the movie, so if 90 minutes of organized hate brings you joy, go and buy your ticket now.” Somehow I really want to see it now. The rest of the reviews average it out at a respectable 76.

Rambo: First Blood

All the ridiculous movies Sylvester Stallone makes in the 21st century are justified by the creation of this one haunting depiction of a Vietnam War vet cracking after coming home. Stallone stars and shares writing credit. In fact, two of the lingering skeletons in America’s closet are on full display in a way few movies have come close to portraying since: the vets we let break overseas and the tone-deaf small towns far too insulated from the rest of the world.

Longmire: Season 4

Another “street-cred” project for Netflix, Longmire was resurrected exclusively for the streaming service. Season 4 joins the previous three on Netflix, which no doubt saw at least a small post-broadcast success online. And hey, the show is kind of good. Walter Longmire is set up as a Sherlock Holmes/John Wayne mashup in the modern-day Midwest, but it’s the show’s prominent display of Native American culture and the historically-relevant clashing germane to said culture that keeps the proceedings interesting.
