Terrible: Inspirational Books

Chicken-soupI’m pretty sure at least one well-meaning family friend or relative got me a copy of Chicken Soup for the College Soul when I graduated from high school (yep, it’s a real book). I’ll let you in on a little secret: I never read it.

High school grads are too cool to read those kinds of books, and college grads are too busy trying to find a job to read them.

Awesome: Amazon Purchasing Power

Give them an Amazon gift card. I was absolutely shocked at how much college textbooks cost. I spent about $600 at the college book store my first semester! Amazon has them for much cheaper, and also has Kindle versions that you can download for your e-reader or tablet.

If you really want to impart some wisdom with your gift, a simple “retail is for suckers” note along with the gift card should do. An Amazon card is also the perfect choice for the college grad — no matter what they need, from breakfast cereal, to a new rug, to toilet paper, they will probably be able to find it on Amazon.

    No small appliances? Really….

A Ninja Blender or the Bullet are not good but great gifts for a recent grad. Anything that encourages going to the gym and having a protein shake is a good thing.

And a stylish USB Drive is a good gift? Really…

When people can’t think of anything else they buy a USB Drive. Only clueless girls looking to gain favor with a guy who absolutely doesn’t know she exists – get these type of gifts.

The pen and jewelry (watch in my case) ring especially true.

I’m going to sound ungrateful here, but that $80 pen and $300 watch are going to be far less useful than the $380 cash. Hell, that’s my first student loan payment right there!

I like your choices except for Dr. Seuss. Surely even the most mercenary, materialistic student among us can find room to stash a tome of sage advice from Theodore Geisel! BTW, great choice on substitute for the book. I’ll leave you with this:

    You’re wrong as the deuce
    And you shouldn’t rejoice
    If you’re calling him Seuss.
    He pronounces it Soice!
