Another month, another great Humble Mobile Bundle to add to the gaming backlog. This time around, it’s a simple theme: Roguelikes, the super hard genre of dungeon exploring and item management based on the classic game Rogue. Given it’s a genre more about thinking through moves and strategy than twitch reactions, it’s a great genre for the less precise controls of a smartphone. Let’s see what the bundle has to offer:

$1 Tier

Desktop Dungeons

Desktop Dungeons is a bit of a classic in terms of rougelikes–as its name suggests, it began as simple desktop game, with one screen to work through strategically. The core of the game stays the same, but now it’s on your phone! It’s perfect for idle moments while waiting in line or something similar.

bit Dungeon I

bit Dungeon is a real-time roguelike, so the enemies aren’t going to wait for you to come to them before attacking. However, bit Dungeon is a very simplistic game, as there are not special skills or anything of the like you have to activate on the fly. Just get in there and start slashing!

bit Dungeon II

Being a sequel, bit Dungeon II offers a bunch of improvements over the original game, including nicer graphics and more varied looking locales. Judging by this PC trailer, it’s clearly made for mobile controls, too!

$5 Tier

Pixel Heroes: Byte & Magic

Pixel Heroes is a very content heavy roguelike that’ll give you a lot of bang for your buck. There are three campaigns to work through, 30 classes to unlock, and just a whole bunch of stuff to work through. This is definitely the game of the bundle that will keep you entertained for hours.

Road Not Taken

Road Not Taken is a beautiful roguelike puzzle game, in which you’re trying to save children that have gotten lost in the woods. Each area is randomly generated, and it’s of utmost importance to try and save as many kids as possible, as it affects the world around you.

Dungelot: Shattered Lands

Dungelot is pretty similar to Desktop Dungeons at its core, with a different coat of paint. Like Desktop Dungeons, you tackle single rooms, but Dungelot is a bit more connected with its world, and the rooms are a bit smaller so they’re quite a bit easier to clear… not that Dungelot is easy, of course.

Beat the Average Tier

Heroes of Loot 2

Heroes of Loot 2 stands out from the other roguelikes by allowing you to control two characters at once. Because of that, you can fine tune your character choices a bit more to your playstyle, as you can choose what you want to focus on in terms of damage dealing and taking.

Sproggiwood

Most roguelikes don’t have really in-depth plots due to the permadeath nature of the genre, but Sproggiwood is a story driven roguelike to enjoy. Based on Finnish lore, you’re a prisoner of Sproggi and must follow his orders to be free… but with a civilization on the line, it’s up to you how you want to handle your path to freedom.

Star Chindy: SciFi Roguelike

Star Chindy definitely stands out here as it’s quite a bit different from the rest of the games in the bundle. Star Chindy is a rogue-like, but it also has real-time ship and unit battles, making this almost feel like a strategy title with higher stakes. It also has some pretty advanced 3D graphics for a mobile game for its genre, so if your phone can handle it, it’s worth giving a try for the spectacle alone.

Which games do you enjoy the most from this bundle? Let us know in the comments!

Pay What You Want tier

Grim Fandango Remastered

Grim Fandango is a Double Fine game, a developer well known for titles such as Day of the Tentacle and Psychonauts. As such, Grim Fandango carries a high pedigree, and it delivers. It’s a very interesting and humorous take on The Day of the Dead, an Hispanic holiday that honors the dearly departed.

Kathy Rain

Kathy Rain stars the titular Kathy Rain, a young woman who returns to her home town after a long absence. Of course, everything isn’t as it once seems, and it’s up to her to uncover the dark secrets of Conwell Springs.

Machinarium

Machinarium is one of the many adventure titles from Amanita Games. In this title, you control a robot that wants to save his friends, and the setting and graphics are extremely beautiful and vibrant, perfect for a mobile title.

$4+ tier

Her Story

Her Story is an indie darling, winning many awards since its release in 2015. Her Story has an interesting setup–you’re looking through old police interview videos of a wife during her husband’s disappearance. Using keys words to eventually unravel the tale, the fantastic live action acting really brings this story alive.

Sorcery! 4

While this is the fourth and final title of the Sorcery! series, you can begin this one if you wish. Based off of the books of the same name, this adventure game is closer to an RPG, with battles and multiple paths to explore, Sorcery is bound to entertain.

Burly Men At Sea

Burly Men At Sea starts off simply enough–three men find an odd map, and they set out to explore the world around them. This title borrows heavily from Scandinavian lore, and has a very simple and clean art styles.

$6+ tier

Samorost 3

Another title from Amanita Games, Samorost 3 is another title that involves exploring and unusual and fantastical setting. While it is the third game of the series, none of the titles really have a deep narrative that you’ll miss–it’s all about discovering a strange new world.

Lumino City

Lumino City is the sequel to a game called Lume… and while the other two titles do not need the previous entries to enjoy them, Lumino City is better played after Lume itself. And it’s worth it too, expanding on Lume’s story into epic proportions.

Are you interested in this great deal of a bundle, make sure to grab it from Humble Bundle before the end of the month!

Sporting a dual camera system (similar to the rumored dual camera on the upcoming iPhone 7), the Honor 8 utilizes two different types of pixel sensors to capture a wider range of colors in your photos. The two 12MP lenses also let you blur the background after the photo has been taken, in order to create more unique images.

Huawei claims that the Honor 8 cameras capture more than three times the amount of light than a traditional single lens. On the front of the camera, Huawei added a 8MP camera for all your video chatting needs.

The device is powered by 2.3 GHz octa-core CPU as well as an i5 co-processor to control all the sensors in the phone. In addition to 4GB in RAM, the phone comes with 32GB of storage (which is expandable up to 128GB using the SD card slot). The 3000mAh battery power offers nearly 2 days of usage before requiring a recharge.

If used only to play games, the Honor 8 battery life would last about 10 hours. The 5.2-inch touch screen is full 1080p, offering 423 pixels-per-inch. The phone operates on a custom version of Android 6.0 and includes other features such as NFC, a USB Type C plug, a fingerprint sensor, and an IR LED. Colors available in the U.S. include black, white and blue.

You can find more pictures of the Honor 8 below. If you are looking for a deal on the device at launch, Newegg is bundling a $50 gift card into preorders as well as JBL Coach limited edition headphones and a transparent case.
Launching on Google Play for Android users recently (LINK) and iOS today (LINK), the new Ben’s Bargains mobile app incorporates all the account functionality found on the main site in a compact, speedy package with more features than our mobile Web version of Ben’s.

The core new feature in the app is mobile notifications. When you set a deal alert on a specific product, we will send you a mobile notification the second that it’s posted on the site (assuming you toggle notifications on). This way, you won’t miss out the next time we post deals that sell out in less than an hour.

Tied to your Ben’s profile, you can manage preferences including Deal Alerts you’ve set on specific products, products that you have set as favorites over time and products that you have recently viewed (either on the Web version of Ben’s or the mobile version).

Similar to the main site, you have the ability to filter products by categories, stores and price range. You can also use the quick filters at the top of the app to see the latest deals, the hottest deals and your recently viewed deals.

We’ve also includes easy icons to trigger specific events. Tapping the bell icon will set a Deal Alert on the product (and tapping it again will turn it off). The same goes for the heart icon, which triggers the favorite function.

We also have a share icon on the deal page that allows you to share to Facebook, Twitter or via email. Also similar to the main site, you can visit the deal page within the app to make comments as well as vote on comments left by others.

The Google Play version is compatible with Jelly Bean and higher (Android version 4.0.3 and up). Our iOS version for Apple devices is compatible with iOS version 7.0 or higher.

Ben’s App on Google Play – Ben’s App on iTunes

Power is always a necessity in today’s world of smartphones, tablets, laptops and every other mobile device that we carry around. Battery manufacturers have certainly recognized this need, thus the influx of portable battery chargers has somewhat exploded over the past five years. One such battery is the Aukey 10000mAh model, a battery that includes a Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 port for 2.4 amp charging of supported Android devices and 2.0 amp charging for supported Apple devices.

Design

The Aukey 10000mAh Battery is 6.5 inches tall, just under 3 inches in width and less than an inch thick; roughly the size of two decks of cards stacked end to end.. The compact design makes it ideal for travel, perhaps more so than competing models from companies like Jackery. On one end of the portable battery, you will find a 1 amp charging port as well as the Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 port. In between the two port, you will find a LED light that can be activated with the power button on the side. On the opposite side from the power button, you will find the micro USB charging port.

The battery is also lightweight, far less than one pound in weight. There are no power meters on the battery to indicate remaining power levels. Instead, Aukey uses indicator lights to provide an estimated range. By pressing the power button once, you can check the power. A white light means there’s 60 to 100 percent of the battery power left. A green light means 20 to 60 percent and a red light means between 0 and 20 percent of battery life left.

Performance

I performed a few timing tests with Aukey’s 10000mAh model, specifically putting it up against other chargers. Charging an iPhone 6 Plus from 50 percent battery life to 100 percent took about 75 minutes using the orange quick charge port; slower than a 2.4 amp wall plug that knocked it out the same in just under 60 minutes. However, I could find no decrease in charging speed between a 2.4 amp wall plug and the Aukey battery when charging up a Samsung Galaxy S6. It was charging at the same rate, ideal for anyone that needs a quick charge during a commute.

On average, you will probably get nearly two full charges for smartphones and one full charge for a tablet. When the Aukey battery is completely dead, it consistently took me just under five hours to completely recharge it using a 2.4 amp wall plug. The secondary 1 amp port performs pretty much identically to any standard iPhone charger from Apple. It’s roughly half the speed of the quick charge port, even less so when using an Android device. However, it’s nice when you have multiple devices to charge, ideal for families perhaps.

I didn’t have any issues with overheating. That can often be an issue with portable batteries, but the Aukey model stayed cool to the touch both when recharging the internal battery and charging up my mobile devices. I also didn’t have any issues with turning the LED light at the top of the battery on and off. The light is fairly bright, but I can’t imagine a scenario at home where I would be able to find the black battery in the dark. However, I can see how it would be useful when carrying it around in a laptop bag, ideal when searching through the bag at night or using the light to illuminate the lock on a car or front door.

Should You Buy It?

If you have one of the Android devices listed at the bottom of the review, then this is definitely a great mobile charger. It would be ideal for anyone that runs out of battery during the day and doesn’t have access to any power outlets. If you have an iPhone, the Aukey battery is fast, just not as fast as a 2.4 amp wall charger. On average, the sale price on this model is usually around $30. That’s roughly the same sale price as the Jackery Giant+, a 12,000 mAh charger. However, the Aukey battery has a much thinner width, basically more portable, and a higher power rating for Android charging.

It’s tough to imagine a world without data immediately accessible at your fingertips. While I did grow up in the world that existed before the iPhone was a blip of an idea inside the head of Steve Jobs, I’ve become so accustomed to whipping out my smartphone and looking up something withing seconds. The same goes for accessing digital content, like video games and movies, as well as reading email, watching silly YouTube videos and getting lost in the front page of the Internet.

While many Americans rely on their smartphone’s data plan for all these tasks, we all know that data is a finite resource that comes at a cost. For instance, I pay $70 a month for 4GB of data on Verizon and that’s shared between two phones.

While it’s tough for me (and my wife) to hit that cap each month, there are times when we have come very close. In those cases, it would have been very useful to have some form of wireless backup that didn’t cost me $10 per gig.

This is a situation where the FreedomPop MiFi 4082 nationwide hotspot would have come in handy. The device allows a user to connect a Wi-Fi enabled device (like a laptop or tablet) and consume up to 500GB of 4G data for free each month. In fact, multiple people can use it simultaneously as it supports up to five connections at any given time.

Ideal for travel, the MiFi 4082 is about the same size as those old-school, Razr flip phones. It comes with a A/C adapter for charging the internal battery as well as thin, cloth sleeve to protect the finish from scratches. This is the kind of device that would be easy to whip out in an airport or while riding in a car in order to connect a tablet up to the Internet.

The device is pretty simple to setup. After taking it out of the box, I plugged it in, held down the power button for a couple seconds and the device quickly located the network. The MiFi 4082 will attempt to search for a 4G network and, if not found, will default to a 3G network. You can tell which network is being accessed by the MiFi 4082 as the indicator light will light up blue for 4G and green for 3G.

It’s easy to determine your 4G WiMax and 3G coverage by checking the coverage map on the FreedomPop website. When I tested the 4G connection speeds, I was able to consistently pull about a 8Mbps download speed. Pretty darn awesome for a company that just gives away data for free! Granted, it’s not the 30Mbps download speed I can consistently pull off Verizon’s LTE network, but it’s also not costing me $70 a month.

Or course, you can opt into paid plans with FreedomPop to increase available data each month. While 500MB is free, a 2GB plan runs about $20 a month and a 4GB plan runs about $35 a month. Hypothetically, you could get away with cancelling coverage on a smartphone, assuming you carried the MiFi 4082 with you at all times and lived in a heavily 4G-coverage area.

In addition, a base $4-a-month plan adds a feature that lets the user rollover unused data each month up to 20GB. This could be ideal if you only need to use the device heavily a couple times a year. There’s also a referral plan in place that offers users the ability to earn 500MB of data when a new user signs up.

If you are interested in the FreedomPop MiFi 4082 nationwide hotspot, check out FreedomPop’s current deal that offers users the device and 2GB of trial data for $29.99. The device alone is listed at $129.99 on the FreedomPop website, so you’ll be getting over 80% off here!: LINK

With the official U.S. launch of the Samsung S5 upon us, fans of the S4 and previous generations of smartphones are considering an upgrade this week. While some reviewers have pegged the S5 as an incremental upgrade from the S4, there are plenty of fans who are excited to check out the upgraded camera, fingerprint scanner, waterproofing and the redesigned version of Android.

However, just because Samsung released a new smartphone doesn’t mean you should run out and buy it right away. History suggests that deals on a single Samsung S5 during the first couple weeks of sales will only amount to $10 to $20 in savings for the consumer.

That being said, Verizon is getting aggressive at launch by duplicating the Buy One, Get One promotion that promoted the Samsung S4 last month. While you will have to pay $300 upfront and wait for $100 in rebates, you will end up spending $200 for 2 smartphones, one being the Samsung S5 and the other a choice of the S5, HTC One or Samsung ATIV SE. In addition, Costco is running a limited time $100 promotion on the S5 here on new activations with Verizon.

To help you figure out, based on your budget, when the best time to purchase the Samsung S5 will be, we dove deep into Ben’s deal history data to analyze all the previous generation deals that we posted over the last few years. On average, Ben’s posts about 60 to 80 deals per year for each entry level, 16GB model in the Samsung S line of smartphones. We know exactly when smartphones go on sale and can predict some obvious price drop trends that the Samsung S5 will follow over the next 12 months.

What do the Samsung S4 and S III tell us about the Samsung S5?

At launch, the typical price of an under contract S model is $200, Of course, the cost of a two-year contract will likely be more than $2000 over the lifetime of the phone. Alternatively, an unlocked model costs between $600 to $750 at launch. The advantage to an unlocked smartphone is the ability to use it on any carrier, including less expensive networks like Straight Talk or Cricket Wireless.

2 months from the release date, Samsung Galaxy S5 purchasers will save 30 to 40 percent on the cost of an under contract phone according to our historical deal data. Both the Samsung S4 and S III could be found for around $120 to $140 under contract at that time in the product life cycle. On top of that, Dell offered an additional $100 gift certificate with a $130 S4 purchase just two months after the initial release. If you wait three months before picking up an unlocked Samsung S5, you will likely save approximately 20 to 25 percent. Roughly, that will be a savings of $120 to $180 off the price of an unlocked phone.

6 months out from release and you should see a 50 percent drop, or $99 price point, for the under contract Samsung S5. The Samsung S4, S III and S II all offered a price point of around $99 within the first six months of launch. In addition, you will be able to find 30 percent off deals on the unlocked version, perhaps anywhere up to $225 off the original MSRP.

9 months out, the Samsung S5 will likely be free under contract from major retailers like Best Buy and Amazon during Black Friday 2014. Both the Samsung S4 and S III hit the $0 under contract price within 9 months of release, thus the S5 will mostly likely copy the same price-reduction model. Samsung will also face stiffer competition from Apple this year with the release of larger iPhones, thus we could even see the free price point (under contract) in late October. The unlocked version will be about 40 percent off at the nine month mark, as well.

12 months out, the unlocked price on the previous generation will hit the 50 percent mark easily when the next version is released. That’s why you should consider picking up the Samsung S4 this month instead of the S5. This is also when the unlocked price on previous generation models starts to flatten out dramatically. If the Samsung S III and S II are any indication, the best price that you will be able to get on an unlocked S4 a year from now will be around 60 percent off the original price, only a $50 savings by waiting an additional 12 months from today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the release of other popular smartphones trigger price reductions on the Samsung S5?

Highly unlikely. While the marketing teams at Samsung, Apple and other companies definitely battle it out over the airwaves with multi-million dollar ad campaigns, the release of new phones from Apple, HTC or Nokia didn’t trigger a price reduction for the S4 or S III. The only thing that would trigger a significant price reduction on the S5 early on would be poor sales of the device in the first 4 to 8 weeks.

Does it matter which service provider I choose in regards to getting the best price on the S5?

Beyond the initial offering from Verizon mentioned above, no. Approximately 80 percent of our data points of our best sales are from retailers, not service providers. Of the service provider deal posts, prices were in line with other retailers at the time. However, be on the lookout for solid service provider deals on Black Friday. These stores are often ignored during the Black Friday fracas, thus have to offer more aggressive deals. It’s also easier to pop into the store on the shopping holiday and pick up a new smartphone than shove your way into a Best Buy or Walmart.

Check Latest Verizon Wireless Deals on Bens

Does it matter which retailer I choose in regards to future sales on the S5?

Regarding deals on under contract phones, look for the most aggressive sales at Best Buy and Amazon. Both of these retailers led the charge on Samsung S model price reductions over the last three years. Regarding deals on unlocked phones, look to eBay for the best prices on unlocked phones. While Amazon is slowly catching up to eBay, the volume of unlocked Samsung devices is usually higher on eBay and the deals are more frequent.

So When Should I Buy the Samsung S5?

Our advice would be to choose from one of the price points above for an under contract or unlocked Samsung S5 that works best for you and set up a Deal Alert on Ben’s. The second that we post a deal that meets your price point, we will send you an email alert. In other words, you can set it and forget it. You can also peruse our mobile phone deals here:

Starting in Singapore, McDonald’s is deploying the “Happy Table,” which contains the ability to turn NFC-enabled smartphones and tablets into race cars. Smartphone-carrying children simply need to hold an NFC-compatible phone up to the table, follow the onscreen prompts and, voila, the phone becomes part of a deadly Hamburgler race kart-style race. You even get to play as classic McDonald’s characters like Birdie, Grimace, Mayor McCheese, and Captain Crook.

Given the simple installation — the race track is really just a set of NFC stickers stuck under the table — racing is not the only thing that McDonald’s has in mind. There’s a whole set of McD’s-themed mini-games to entertain the young customer, including Whac-a-Mole and Battleship.

It’s worth noting that this interesting concept is coming first to Asia. As many travelers already know, McDonald’s can be like mini-sanctuaries for Americans abroad, but at the same time, these fast food restaurants are often fancy overseas. They offer restrooms, air conditioning, ice, and even Wi-Fi. Once this “Happy Table” takes off, there’s no telling where it will end — Happy Meal, Happy Table, Happy Garage, Happy Heart Check, Happy Tax Return…

While Google has already released a new Nexus 7 and Amazon plans to launch new Kindle Fire HD tablets this month, there are still a number of inexpensive tablets on the market that can provide significant value to students. Currently discounted to a sale price of $139.99 (regular MSRP $169.99), the HP Slate 7 is one of these options. Powered by Android 4.1, this tablet can provide productivity tools for working students while also offering entertainment options for downtime between classes. It’s certainly more flexible than a tablet like the Kindle Fire HD which is basically built for consuming entertainment.

Build Quality and Design

When you take the Slate 7 out of the box for the first time, you may notice some serious heft to the tablet. It’s definitely one of the heavier 7-inch tablets that I’ve tested, and I prefer the sturdy build. It also feels a bit smaller than other 7-inch tablets due to the wide bezel, despite the identical screen size. The soft feel to the back of the tablet is also much nicer than the backing on the Kindle Fire HD and I can wrap my hand around the HP Slate 7 easily. Similar to all tablets, the front bezel and glass of the HP Slate 7 is a fingerprint magnet.

On the top of the tablet, you will find the power button, headphones jack and the uncovered MicroSD card slot. You can add an additional 32GB of memory to the tablet using a MicroSD card, thus the starting 8GB of storage isn’t as big of an issue. On the bottom, you will find the speakers and the microUSB port for charging the device. In addition, the volume rocker is on the right side of the tablet. Regarding camera placement, a 3MP camera is on the back at the top right corner and a front-facing camera can be found at the top of the bezel.

How Does It Look and Sound?

The HP Slate 7 sports a 7-inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display and it’s definitely the weakest aspect of the tablet. While the touchscreen is fairly responsive, the display has a washed out look, especially when attempting to crank up the brightness levels. When attempting to zoom in on text, the sharpness definitely fades away. In addition, the viewing angles aren’t fantastic, thus you really need to prop up the tablet when attempting to read email or watch a movie on Netflix. Contrast is also an issue, mostly the washed-out black colors when browsing the Web.

Regarding sound quality, the internal speakers are passable, but a bit tinny. However, HP has included Beats Audio compatibility in the Slate 7. When using headphones, you can adjust the Beats Audio modes in the Settings menu to provide greater audio depth to music and movies. After trying all three modes as well as turning the option completely off, there’s definitely a significant improvement in sound quality; specifically, bass is stronger and dialogue is clearer. I really enjoyed the difference when listening to recordings of live performances. Matching the Slate 7 up against other tablets like the Kindle Fire HD or iPad Mini, there’s no doubt that Beats Audio gives HP an edge over competitors.

What Can I Do With It?

Rather than load a custom version of Android, HP stuck with the standard Android 4.1, definitely a good choice. While it’s not as user-friendly at the iPad Mini, the sheer number of options available to users on the Google Play store is tremendous. You will also notice lots of familiar apps preloaded on the device including Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps and Chrome. HP was definitely good about not preloading the tablet with tons of custom software, only the HP ePrint app for printing documents while on the go.

Personally, I have about 8 different email addresses for work, most of which are powered by Gmail. The Gmail application is excellent at quick notifications and the interface works just as well as email on my iPhone. Probably more of a accolade for Android than the Slate per se, I really love the application switching option at the bottom of the screen. I’ve been on Apple devices for so long that I always forget how useful window switching can be on a tablet.

Regarding battery life, I usually got about 6 to 7 hours out of the battery when checking email and surfing the Web. However, if you like to crank up the brightness levels and watch lots of streaming video, that figure drops to about 4 to 5 hours. Regarding the camera, I wouldn’t bother using it. While it can be useful for Skype, taking pictures with the tablet is an extremely poor replacement for a smartphone.

Should I Buy It?

Is the HP Slate 7 as good as the new 1080p Google Nexus 7? No. However, you get to save $90 on the price point and that’s significantly important for students on a budget. It’s definitely a much better price point than the iPad Mini which is more than double the cost of the HP Slate 7. If you are in the market for an inexpensive starter tablet, the HP Slate 7 may be a solid choice. However, be sure to check out reviews on the Hisense Sero 7 Pro ($129) and the ASUS MeMo Pad HD 7 ($149) as other possible budget options for a 7-inch tablet. You can also find deals on the HP Slate 7 as low as $110 in the past couple months.
