Shopping for a Fitbit fitness tracker this year? We’ve looked through all the Black Friday ads and broken down where you can get the cheapest Fitbit Versa 2 and Lite models, the cheapest Fitbit Inspire HR, the cheapest Fitbit Charge 3 as well as the best price on the Fitbit Ace 2 tracker for kids.

Best Deal on a Fitbit Versa 2: $149.99

This price is already active on Best Buy, Amazon and Walmart. If those sites sell out, you will find the same price in-store at Sam’s Club on Black Friday. It’s possible that Kohl’s will include this for Kohl’s Cash on Black Friday, BUT it’s currently not eligible.

The Fitbit Versa 2 (MSRP: $200) offers all-day activity tracking, a AMOLED display, built-in Amazon Alexa, water resistance and mobile notifications (compatible with Android & iOS devices).

Best Buy: Fitbit Versa 2 (3 colors)

Amazon: Fitbit Versa 2 (4 colors)

Walmart: Fitbit Versa 2 (3 colors)

Best Deal on a Fitbit Versa Lite: $99.99 + $30 GC

This deal will be active on Black Friday week at Kohl’s, offering an identical sale price to retailers like Walmart and Amazon. The difference is the additional $30 in Kohl’s Cash that you will receive with the purchase. This is the cheapest price we have seen for a new model (lowest refurb was $86).

The Fitbit Versa Lite (MSRP: $160) is identical in design to the Versa 2, but does not include on-screen workouts, stair climbing / swim lap tracking, local music storage, Alexa-voice control or Fitbit Pay. It also offers a LCD screen instead of OMOLED. Battery life is 1 day shorter than the Versa 2 as well.

Kohl’s: Fitbit Versa Lite (5 colors)

Best Deal on a Fitbit Inspire HR: $69.99 + $15 GC

Another deal at Kohl’s that will be active on Black Friday week. You will find the same sale price at Walmart, Sams’s Club and Amazon. But you won’t find the bonus $15 in Kohl’s Cash at any other retailer.

The Fitbit Inspire HR (MSRP: $100) offers activity / exercise tracking, a heart rate monitor, on-screen notifications and a swim-proof design. It’s not a smartwatch, like the Versa though. You won’t have features like smart apps or voice control.

Kohl’s: Fitbit Inspire HR (3 colors)

Best Deal on a Fitbit Charge 3: $99.99 + $30 GC

Continuing to dominate the compaction, Kohl’s pops up again with the best overall deal. You will find the Fitbit Charge 3 for the $99.99 sale price at Sam’s Club and Amazon, but not the additional $30 gift card.

The Fitbit Charge 3 (MSRP: $150) offers a heart rate tracker, swim-proof design, sleep tracking, smartphone notifications and an impressive 7-day battery life.

Kohl’s: Fitbit Charge 3 (2 colors)

Best Deal on a Fitbit Ace 2: $49.99

The best advertised deal on the Fitbit Ace 2 is going to be at Best Buy during Black Friday week (although likely price-matched by Amazon and Walmart as well).

The Fitbit Ace 2 (MSRP: $70) offers activity & sleep tracking up to 5 days of battery life, parental controls as well as a swim-proof design. It’s recommended for kids 6 and up.

Best Buy: Fitbit Ace 2 (3 colors)

Gone are the days of trying to keep track of how many calories you’ve eaten or how much exercise you’ve gotten in a day — now, as they say, “there’s an app for that.” Here are some of the best fitness gadgets out there making it easier than ever to get or stay in shape.

Buy this gift for someone into fashion as well as fitness

Releasing on November 6, 2015, the Misfit Shine 2 is the followup to the original Misfit Shine; an extremely popular wrist wearable that was very affordable. Keeping the same round design of the device, the disc can be inserted into a necklace as well as worn on a wrist. The device can also be clipped onto clothing at night to track sleep data.

MSRP: $99 | Lowest Price on Ben’s: n/a

Cons: Original Misfit Shine users complain of poor app software, no heart rate tracking.

Get this gift for the person who just likes to stay active

The Fitbit Charge Wireless Activity Wristband is similar to the Flex model but includes an actual LED readout screen and an altimeter. The newest offering from the most well-known of the activity tracker brands out there, the Fitbit Charge keeps track of calories eaten/burned, activity and even sleep. You can also step up to teh HR model, if you want heart rate tracking.

MSRP: $130 | Lowest Price on Ben’s: $86

Cons: For the price, you could almost get an actual smart watch (like the Pebble) that does more than just fitness /activity tracking.

MSRP: $150 | Lowest Price on Ben’s: $120

Buy this gift for the kid who spends too much time playing video games

The GeoPalz iBitz Pedometer is a small clip-on activity tracker that syncs with a game/app that requires kids to have to actually exercise and eat well to keep a virtual “pet” alive (sounds kind of like a real-life Tamagotchi — anyone else remember those things??).
There’s a reason Fitbit took two spots on our holiday list, they make awesome fitness trackers!
Buy this gift for the person super serious about running

People who are into running can be, like, really into running. For these people, the Garmin Forerunner 620 GPS Watch w/ HRM-Run monitor1 is as technical a running watch as you’re going to get. This GPS watch, when used with the HRM heart rate monitor, tracks and calculates a ton of things that quite honestly, I’m not familiar with (vertical oscillation, recovery time and VO2 max estimate, to name a few) but I’m sure runners are. If you’re not as concerned with some of those things, you can get an older, less high-tech Garmin Forerunner GPS watch on sale for $100 to $150.

Trevor Ruben

Apple has decided to make smart watches important to the population. You might scoff at that statement, but it’s the truth. Where Samsung and Pebble couldn’t light a fire, the iPhone maker dropped a bomb loud enough for the merpeople of Atlantis to hear. The Apple Watch is coming out on April 24, before which would seem the ideal time to talk about the direct competition. We’re not going to do that. We’re going to talk about watches that are only sort-of smart, for all the people that prefer function over fancy.

Technically they’re all smart watches, but then that would mean, technically, we’re all smart people, so let’s skip the semantics and just go with the flow.

Fitbit

You’ll notice that every smart watch marketing website expresses at least a small bit of fitness features for the featured device. Tracking any number of health-related metrics throughout the day has captured the interest of many people, thanks in large part to the success of the Fitbit line of bands and watches.

Fitbit on Ben’s

What the Fitbit lacks in widespread functionality it makes up for in an appreciable quality of slightness when you’re wearing it. It’s meant to fade onto your arm, granted you’ve purchased a model without a face. You could get a watch-looking model, but then you wouldn’t be hip. You’d be hipster.

Fitbit’s website shows off the ever-expanding roster of bands and faces. It’s a whole world of happy health times over there.

Microsoft Band

As always, it seems like Microsoft is one step behind and, maybe, about half a step ahead in some way or another. What the Windows company has going for it these days is its unique tiles layout, present across many of its computing platforms. The Microsoft Band distills this down to as small a form-factor as ever, yet it’s still eye-catching in its own right.

Microsoft Band on Amazon

If you happen to own a Windows Phone, this is just about the only meaningful smart-ish watch you can buy. Everything else does the whole “compatible with Android and Apple devices!” schtick like it’s a virtue. Meanwhile, Windows Phone users are left to whisper sweet nothings to themselves, in a vaccum of empty space.

Vector

This is the closest you’ll get to a vintage James Bond kind of thing. Instead of touch, you’ve got three physical buttons that navigate the screen. The form factor is classic and stylish. It’s water proof and, praise the universe, the battery is built to last for an entire month. Bond never had to recharge his gadgets. Why should you?

Not to deliberately contradict myself within three paragraphs, but the Vector is compatible with Android, Apple and Windows Phones. Head the official website for updates on when the thing is actually available. Pre-orders are live now. You’ll notice a number of compromises the designers had to make in order to achieve that 30-day battery life, including a monochrome display. As a smart-ish watch, though, it’s pretty high-end.

Jawbone

The Fitbit’s primary competitor is the Jawbone, a product that clearly didn’t go through the same rigoruous naming process in a dimly-lit room of evil marketing geniuses. Well, maybe it did. I am writing about it (sort-of). Here’s a picture.

Jawbone on Amazon

The Jawbone does all the things the Fitbit does, but it does these things while not looking like a Fitbit, which means something to people who already had a Fitbit. If you want to be ahead of the curve, get a Jawbone first. People might just give you awards.

Misfit Flash

Here’s the expected affordable element to the random list of products. Another fitness tracker, the Misfit Flash does a lot to convince people that its actually just a watch, all the while slyly doing all those important fitness tracking things. The cheapness comes in the plastic materials used to house the gadgetry within, and yet it’s still waterproof and quite versatile.

Misfit Flash on Amazon

Perhaps most innovative about the Flash is its underwater tracking mode, adjusting its metric tracking for swimming activites rather than the typical, boring above-ground stuff. If the Misfit Flash teaches us anything, it’s that merpeople need to work out too.

Happy Dumb Watches

If you’re exhausted with all this talk about glorified counting machines, let’s take a walk on the side of the tracks where watches don’t aspire to be anything but unglorified counting machines.

The Abyss

I’ll be honest; I stumbled across this watch perusing through Amazon and, having no idea what it might be, read the description and saw the word Tralfamadorian. In the likely event you have no idea what that means, go read a book by Kurt Vonnegut. Whether or not your outlook on humanity is changed forever, at least you’ll better understand those three strange classmates who couldn’t stop talking about the writer.

Jawbone on Amazon

As for the watch, it’s a silly little device that displays time with dots. It doesn’t matter. The marketer got me with his or her words.

Flux Capacitor Watch

You can go on Google and find a watch to represent just about any pop-culture thing you want. After doing that for a few hours, I decided this Back to the Future watch was the one I liked the most. Time-travel is a complicated idea, so why shouldn’t time-telling strive for that same level of ridiculousness?

On ThinkGeek

Can you tell the time on that watch? I can’t, and that’s what makes it special. When you press a button, the lights start to flash, requiring that you count the ticks and then deduce the time. If you haven’t ended up in a fatal car accident by the end, you’ll certainly have traveled through time.

The Nixie Watch

To suggest that the machinations of any kind of watch, digital, analog or super-intelligent, make any sort of sense to me would be a falsification of mild proportion. When I say the Nixie Watch makes me wonder about the very core elements of life, I mean that in direct comparison to watches that comunicate with satelites and display images in thousands of pixels.

Even if the science is simple, I’d rather not know. The world is a beautiful mystery.

Keeping track of my weight and body fat has always seemed like a depressing task to me, especially since my post-twenties metabolism is starting to slow down and my general aversion to exercise isn’t exactly beneficial to my body. Plopping myself down on the couch after work and watching Netflix season marathons of Warehouse 13 and Breakout Kings isn’t helping either.

Last year, my fiancée and I purchased two Fitbit Ultras in order to keep track of our general activity during the day. The tiny device has encouraged us to take more walks and visit the gym more often. However, while the data is interesting, getting the most out of a Fitbit account involves active participation to catalog the calories in your daily meals as well as logging sleep habits, activities and your weight from time to time.

Enter the Fitbit Aria

The Fitbit Aria is an Internet-connected bathroom scale that automatically uploads weight and body fat information to your Fitbit account. While I still have to keep track of what I’m eating to monitor my caloric intake, the Aria takes weight monitoring off the plate for myself and my fiancée.

Setting up the device is ridiculously easy. After spending a few minutes connecting to my home’s wireless network and to our Fitbit accounts, we simply entered initials into the scale for each of us. For the most part, the scale will automatically recognize who you are when standing on it. If the scale is confused for any reason, you simply tap your foot on the scale to select the correct initials. I’m still using the factory batteries that came with the scale.

[pullquote]Over the last six months, I’ve never had an issue with uploading data over my home’s wireless network.[/pullquote]According to Fitbit, up to eight registered users can use the scale to relay weight and body fat information back to their personal Fitbit account. Guests can also use the scale to measure their weight, but the data isn’t uploaded anywhere.

To measure body fat percentage, you have to be barefoot when stepping up on the scale. The scale sends a slight electrical current through your body, thus pregnant women, young kids and anyone with a pacemaker shouldn’t use the Aria. I’ve found the body fat percentage to be deadly accurate. I’m familiar with the manual way to measure my body fat and it’s almost identical to that reading. It’s also very consistent on each reading, an issue that plagues older bathroom scales that measure body fat. Data can be viewed on the Web version of the Fitbit dashboard or a mobile device like an iPhone.

Regarding design, it’s easily the most luxurious object in my bathroom. The polished slab of glass on the top of the scale is definitely slick. The backlight display has a soft glow, definitely not overpowering in a dim room. The only potential problem with the glass top is that it can become slippery when wet. You should weigh yourself before taking a shower, not after.

The biggest issue with the Aria isn’t functionality or design; it’s price. The MSRP on the Fitbit Aria is about $130, significantly higher than other scales on the market. For instance, this EatSmart Precision scale has rave Amazon reviews, tracks all the same data and can be found on sale regularly between $50 to $70. You are paying a premium for automation, basically allowing the scale and your Fitbit account to keep track of all that information for you. However, it’s important to note that the Aria is cheaper than other Internet-connected weight / body fat scales like the Withings WS-50.

Is It Worth It?

That really depends on how conscientious you are about monitoring your health. Personally, I’m absolutely terrible at it. Having the Aria keeping track of my weight has been really helpful for me and I’ve lost 7.5 pounds since the start of the year. Not a huge amount, but heading in the correct direction.

The knowledge about my weight and body fat sticks with me when I’m making a decision to skip dessert at dinner or perhaps hit the treadmill before work. As much as I previously wanted to ignore my weight, I’m happy that I did. Make sure you pair the Aria with another Fitbit product like the Flex, Zip or One to get the most bang for your buck.
