Free Playstation Plus Games June 2015 Edition: AAA Stealth

By on May 29, 2015

June, also known as the month of E3 in video game land, is a good month for Playstation Plus members. There’s a clear strategy of cross promotion going on with one particular offering, but the beneficiary is most certainly the gamer. Sony wants to remind the world that a certain stealth franchise is about to reenter the spotlight.

Here are all the games free to Playstation Plus members over the month of June, courtesy of the Playstation Blog.

PS4

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

Hideo Kojima understands the value of the digital marketplace. He’s the man responsible for P.T., that horror demo/Silent Hills teaser/defunct teaser for the now cancelled Silent Hills. I’m sure he had a strong hand in the conceptualization of this newly free offering, too. Ground Zeroes is a two-hour hint at the forthcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, taking full advantage of the new, beautiful engine. It’s sure to suck the life out of the millions of franchise devotees.

And what beautiful timing. The mother of all stealth franchises is sure to make its fullest debut at this year’s E3. The glorified demo went over quite well with critics, prasieworthy in all aspects except one – the price. Two hours wasn’t enough to justify $20. Zero dollars, though, is a compelling offer.

Skulls of the Shogun: Bone-A-Fide Edition

What was once a prized possession in the Microsoft camp has turned widespread. Skulls of the Shogun has jumped from Windows to Xbox 360 to Steam to the App stores and now the PS4 before the Xbox One. You’ve got to give credit to the developer for sticking with it long after sales numbers seemed to dig its grave. That’s a good thing, since the game is actually a blast to play.

It’s a turn-based squad combat game – the kind of game where you direct units one block at a time – except this one doesn’t have blocks; rather, there’s a more organic movement system that challenges the player’s sense of space as well as his or her tactics. The art style and the writing lighten the mood considerably, luring you into a false sense of safety before throwing some dastardly new enemy unit in your face.

Super Exploding Zoo (also on PS Vita)

It’s a tower defense game where you guide groups of explosive zoo animals into invading aliens. Don’t expect the most complex game ever. Just expect things to explode.

Futuridium EP Deluxe (also on PS Vita)

Last month’s PS Plus offerings featured a game called Race the Sun, an exceedingly simple endless runner-style experience wherein you guide a slim glider at extreme speed into the horizon. Futuridium EP Deluxe is that game with color, shooting and designers who did more drugs.

It’s actually a little bit strange how similar those two games are. If you enjoyed Race the Sun, you’d be foolish to avoid this one.

PS3

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

A western first-person shooter with a glamorous cel-shaded art-style. And it isn’t a Wii game. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is a perfect candidate for the PS Plus program, boasting exactly zero multiplayer modes but a rock-solid campaign that experiments with arcade scoring and narrative induction. It’s only semi-serious too, which means you won’t be rolling your eyes while it tries to outdo Red Dead Redemption.

Cloudberry Kingdom

Randomly generated is popular right now. 2D platformers are popular. Why not throw those two words together and cross our fingers? Cloudberry Kingdom is a strange combination of many things, chief among such being ambition and simplicity. This is a game that needs a trailer more than a screenshot.

Get it? Every level is new and unpredictable, which makes the baseline difficulty of this game essentially sadistic. As it ramps up, you and up to seven of your friends will understand why there are seven levels of hell instead of just the one.

In case any of my descriptions were too esoteric, here’s the video that Sony wants you to watch with all the games collected into one place. You have until the end of June to cash in.
