Free Holiday Shipping starts at Target on November 1
Announced earlier today, Target will roll out free holiday shipping on November 1 for the holiday shopping season. While Target previously extended the free shipping period until the start of the new year, the company is reducing the time period for free shipping by about a week and ending the promotion on December 23.
In regards to deals this year, company executives are reducing the overall number of deals, but specifically targeting weekends for special promotions starting on November 11. Target experimented with this concept last year, specifically offering Black Friday pricing on select products earlier in the month for a short 2 to 3 day period.
In addition, Target is launching a new feature called GiftNow. When you make a gift purchase for someone, you will have the option of letting Target email the gift recipient prior to shipment. The gift recipient has the following options:
- Accepting the present as-is
- Making changes like changing the color / design for a similar model or swapping out the size for something that actually fits (ideal for clothing / shoes).
- Completely swapping it out for something else sold at Target.
Conceptually, this tackles the issue of post-holiday returns. Target can save money on shipping items back & forth to the gift recipient in addition to cutting down on the volume of people at the return desk after Christmas.
Target is also improving the company’s mobile app by adding mobile checkout for all RedCard holders. Basically, RedCard holders will be able to pay for their purchases and redeem Cartwheel offers with one scan of their phone. It’s unclear if consumers will be able to avoid the checkout line completely though.
