Forget Ring. Wyze just announced a video doorbell for only $30.

Once again positioning themselves as the low cost leader in technology, Wyze is planning to launch a wired, 1080p video doorbell for the low cost of $29.99, basically $70 less than Ring’s cheapest product.

With preorders starting today, Wyze is planning to launch the video doorbell during January 2021. It’s going to provide a 1080p full HD video stream at a 3:4 aspect ratio (ideal for checking on a smartphone). Similar to a Ring, it allows for 2-way audio so you can speak to whoever is at your front door.

The Wyze video doorbell lights up when motion is detected and starts recording, useful for scaring off anyone trying to steal a package off your doorstep. There’s an option for push notifications as well, basically a alert any time motion is detected.

Regarding video storage, the standard plan is free. When motion is detected, the Wyze doorbell records 12-second videos and stores those videos in the cloud for 2 weeks. There’s also a $2-a-month upgrade option that expands video recording frequency and isolates alerts to detected people only (as opposed to an animal or a windy day).

The doorbell is IP65 weather resistant and has 19 different chime sounds ranging from regular doorbell chimes to birds chirping. It’s not clear if there’s a custom option.

One drawback id that this doorbell is specifically for hardwired installations, thus you simply can’t mount it anywhere on your home. It will need to replace an existing doorbell.
