YouTube Highlight: Understand How Chuck Jones Made Looney Toons Great

By on July 18, 2015

If you’ve watched a cartoon in the last 50 years, you’ve seen the infuence of Chuck Jones. It’s inescapable. He’s the John Lassetter of Looney Tunes. Actually, Lassetter is the Chuck Jones of Pixar. He created – directed, wrote, animated, etc. – a vast many of Warner Bros. short cartoons over the course of his life (1912-2002), and him and his work have been deconstructed and studied so widely as to almost render any further observation on the subject redundant.

And yet, today’s YouTube highlight from the channel Every Frame a Painting manages to revitalize the study. If you want to understand why Bugs Bunny, the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, Tom and Jerry, Daffy Duck and so many other cartoons worked so well and stand so strong even today, this video his how you do it:

For more about Jones, head over to ChuckJones.com. For more about the art of film in general, Every Frame a Painting on YouTube continues to put out great, film school-style videos. They’re responsible for a number of viral hits, from What is Bayhem? to How to Do and Action Comedy.

So, next time you see a cartoon in theaters or happen to catch one online or on TV, don’t forget about the Looney Toons and Chuck Jones. Disney doesn’t deserve all the credit.
