10 Gut Reactions to HBO’s Andy Samberg Tennis Mockumentary
Look, I know I’m a bit behind on this one, but I can’t just watch the trailer for 7 Days in Hell and not react in some tangible, documented way. Not only is Andy Samberg leading a mockmentary about a seven-day-long tennis match against Game of Thrones’ Kit Harrington, but there’s a cast of such strange diversity as to compel a desire to see an actual documentary about the wrap party for this whole thing.
Just watch the trailer, if you haven’t already:
A number of things come to mind. Instead of simply putting them in a paragraph and calling it a day, I’m going to list them for the sake of a more compelling headline. And, frankly, I do feel a bit like organically regurgitating all the strange thoughts that ran through my head as I saw these odd images flashing across my screen.
- Andy Samberg is just goofy enough to rock any hairdo on the planet.
- Kit Harrington is not, but, given the success of his last comedic role, he might prove me wrong.
- John McEnroe is the MVP of sports parody.
- Serena Williams gets a line about race – trouble officially asked for.
- I take back every thing I said about Kit Harrington: “I don’t know what the word strategy means, Brian Gumbel.”
- Tennis is an inherently comedic sport.
- Five minute grunting montage? Is that a guarantee?
- Confusion.
- Where is Kristen Wiig in all of this? Oh right, she’s doing this…
- All else equal, 7 Days in Hell would be objectively funnier if it aired on ESPN, but only because ESPN is incapable of self-awareness.
Instead, 7 Days in Hell debuts on HBO streaming services on July 8. However this goes, thanks HBO and Andy Samberg. Just, thank you.
