31 Days of Horror Movies, All Streaming on Netflix

October is here, which means the countdown to Halloween is officially on. A great way to celebrate all month long is by taking part in an October horror movie challenge–a different scary movie every night this month. To make it extra easy, here are 31 of the best horror movies currently streaming on Netflix. From the classic, to the actually scary, to the funny, the ridiculous, and everything in between, you should be able to get a nice well-rounded scary movie fix. Have fun!

10/1: The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

Joss Whedon-written/produced horror satire starts out like your standard scary movie and quickly reaches awesome levels of over-the-top ridiculousness. Lots of blood, lots of fun.

10/2: The Evil Dead (1981)

Arguably the best of the “cabin in the woods” horror movies, no scary movie challenge would be complete without this classic Bruce Campbell flick.

10/3: Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

The title pretty much sums it up: campy (or kampy?) horror at its best. Holds a surprising 75% “fresh” rating at Rotten Tomatoes.

10/4: Slither (2006)

Nathan Fillion and Elizabeth Banks star in this highly reviewed horror movie about super gross slug-like parasites. 

10/5: Carrie (1976)

A Halloween classic.

10/6: The Human Centipede (2009)

This “100% medically accurate” movie about a mad scientist who sews his victims together into a human centipede is one of the grosser things I have ever witnessed. The sequel is also streaming on Netflix, but it’s really, really awful.

10/7: Scream (1997)

The new classic that gave us lines like “do you like scary movies?” and that iconic scream mask. All 3 sequels are also streaming (Scream 2 is pretty good but the rest are pretty lame).

10/8: Re-Animater (1985)

A college student gets placed with the worst random roommate ever: a guy who’s obsessed with bringing the dead back to life. Holds an impressive 95% “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes.

10/9: The Host (2006)

This excellent Kaiju/monster movie is currently the highest grosses South Korean film of all time.

10/10: Funny Games (1997)

The original Austrian version of this movie about a family being held hostage and tortured by two young men is pretty scary stuff (and much better than the 2007 US remake, in my opinion).

10/11: Hellraiser (1987) (and a million sequels)

Lots of grossness and violence in this classic British horror film. There’s literally like 9 sequels streaming as well if you just can’t get enough.

10/12: Land of the Dead (2005)

Not quite as good as Day of the Dead or Dawn of the Dead, but a pretty fun zombie movie nonetheless.

10/13: Children of the Corn (1984)

Kind of slow and serious, but pretty creepy.

10/14: The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Let the kids stay up late and get in on this one. Or not — it’s a great enough Halloween movie for just adults as well!

10/15: Rosemary’s Baby (1968)

Often ranked as one of the top 10 horror movies of all time, Rosemary’s Baby tells the happy tale of a woman pregnant with the literal spawn of Satan.

10/16: Dead Snow (2009)

A movie about zombie nazis, need I say more?

10/17: Bride of Chucky (1998)

Not as good as the original Chucky movie made 10 years earlier (Child’s Play) but still a pretty silly and fun horror flick.

10/18: The Toxic Avenger (1985)

This cult favorite tells the story of a bullied geek who falls into a barrel of toxic waste and is transformed into a deformed superhero who brutally kills the criminals of Tromaville. Gory, B-movie awesomeness.

10/19: Tucker & Dale Vs Evil (2010)

I had zero expectations when I started watching this horror/comedy, and was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved it (critics agree).

10/20: House on Haunted Hill (1959)

One of those traditional Halloween movies with lots of ghosts, skeletons and old school special effects.

10/21: Trollhunter (Trolljegeren) (2010)

More of a comedy than a horror film, but definitely worth a watch.

10/22: Creepshow 2 (1987)

George Romero-written horror anthology based on Stephen King stories features three “Jolting Tales of Horror”: Old Chief Wooden Head, The Raft, and The Hitchhiker.

10/23: C.H.U.D (1984)

It was critically panned, but this monster flick about Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers is still unintentional funny enough to be included on the list.

10/24: House at the End of the Street (2012)

I have never seen this one, but it stars the great Jennifer Lawrence so it might be worth checking out.

10/25: Tremors 2: Aftershocks (1995)

Nah, it doesn’t achieve the same level of greatness as the original Tremors, but it’s still lots of campy fun.

10/26: The Faculty (1998)

A teen horror film about high school teachers being controlled by evil aliens. Written by the guy who wrote Scream and directed by Robert Rodriguez.

10/27: Tales from the Hood (1995)

Spike Lee-produced horror anthology has one of the funnier tag lines ever: Chill or be Chilled.

10/28: Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead (2006)

chicken-possessed zombie demons are on the loose in one of the most ridiculous movies I’ve ever seen.

10/29: The Walking Dead (2010, 2011, 2012); also American Horror Story (2011)

Technically, they aren’t horror films, but both the Walking Dead and American Horror Story are two excellent Halloween-ish shows streaming on Netflix.

10/30: Piranha (1978)

Before Piranha 3D and Piranha 3DD, there was the original.

10/31: Something Totally Over the Top

To close out the month, choose one of the following ridiculous titles: Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader, Picocchio’s Revenge, Gingerbread Man 3, Snoop Dog’s Hood of Horror, Vampire Bats, or Axe Giant: the Wrath of Paul Bunyon.

   Wow, thanks for this list, I’ve been doing a lot of searches for what people think are the “best” horror movies and soooo many of them are SHIT. I didn’t think it could get any worse until I saw this grade A shit-list. Its obvious you have never even seen most of the films on your “list” You win the prize! Stay away from Horror.
