Meal planning is a fantastic way to save both time and money week to week.  With life being so busy nowadays, cooking every night seems far from ideal, but constantly ordering take out and fast food is both unhealthy and can add up quickly.  Setting aside some of a day to meal prep is a perfect solution, but it can be a bit overwhelming for a newbie.  Don’t worry though, as here’s a step by step guide to help you get meal planning in no time:

#1: Figure Out Your Dietary Needs, or Wants

The first step is the probably the hardest step, but it’s the most important.  If you’re trying to plan out meals, you need to understand what your body needs, and maybe what your body doesn’t like, too.  Also, you need to ask yourself why you’re doing this–is this only a money and time saving measure, or are you trying to lose weight?  Gain muscle?  Maybe an attempt to stick to dietary restrictions?  Once you can clearly answer why you want to begin meal planning, you can actually begin to plan.

#2: Find Some Recipes You Want to Make (and are within your skill level)

Another difficult step for some, if you’re new at cooking.  It’s very important to know what you need to cook when you’re meal prepping, and unless you’re really good at making up meals in your head, the best way to do that is by amassing a bunch of recipes.  Try to find things that sound fun or tasty to make, but also try to make sure you’re not overstepping your skill level.  Of course, cooking is the type of skill you’ll only get better at by doing it, but it’s not the best idea to try to make a soufflé if you’ve only boiled pasta before.  An example for me, I have trouble with recipes that require too many odd ingredients, as I’ll probably only use them with the recipe I’m looking at or a few others, so not only am I unfamiliar with the stuff, but it feel almost like a waste of money.  I tend to stick to recipes with less overall ingredients, as I am less likely to forget or mess up something along the way.

#3: Actually Plan the Meals

An easy step to forget in the hustle and bustle of everything, and easily the one I mess up most often.  When meal planning, looking up recipes, and making grocery lists, make sure you’ve actually planned enough meals to last your prepping timeframe (typically a week for most, some prep twice a week though).  If you don’t have enough to cover you for all your meals and all your days, then you’re going to left desperately looking for something to eat on those empty days… and that can do a number on your wallet and your diet plan!

That said, it’s always a good idea to prepare for the worst.  If say, you burned a meal or something went bad earlier than expected, it can be quite helpful to have a few ’emergency meals’ on hand to help bridge the gap.  Ideally, this would be something you cooked well in advance and froze some portions of, but additionally things like frozen dinners (provided they pass the dietary test!) and protein bars can help with meal failures.

#4: Make A Grocery List

We’ve all done it at least once, right?  “Oh, I only need a few items, I don’t need to make a list.”  Then you go to the grocery store, and come out with twenty things you didn’t need, and only half of the stuff you did need.  If you want to save money and be efficient at meal planning, you really have to make a grocery list to keep yourself on track and get only what you need.  Not only does it help with you not buying unnecessary stuff (if you buy spinach 50% off but it goes bad before you use it, that doesn’t save any money), but also makes sure you don’t buy an item you already have some off (assuming you check your pantry before making the list).  Wasting money on stuff you don’t actually is, obviously, a huge money waster after all!

#5: Set Aside Time to Cook

The last step, but the one you’ve been preparing for… time to actually cook and prepare the meals!  For all its time saving during the week, meal prepping can be a bit time consuming on the day of prepping itself.  Depending on how many recipes you’re making, it could take multiple hours.  Of course, that depends on how and what equipment is needed to cook the food.  A slow cooker cooks food in six to eight hours, but having something in the slow cooker frees the oven and stovetop up for other recipes, and a slow cooker is very much ‘set it and go’ in terms of cooking.  If you properly manage your kitchen space and recipe times (which will take practice, of course), you can cut down on prep time drastically.

Salt and pepper go together like… salt and pepper.  (They don’t go together like things, things go together like them!)  We all have salt and pepper in our house, and most of us use them for more than just killing slugs.  But due to their grainy nature, you can’t just keep them in a bowl or throw a pile in your fridge – you need a specially designed salt and/or pepper carrier known to top-level chefs as a “shaker.”

Spice Up Your Life with These Fantastic Salt and Pepper Shakers

As someone who lived in the South from my birth to my mid-twenties, I can tell you without a doubt that we like to fry up any food we can get our hands on. I have a new addiction and it appears to be contagious. My wife is now addicted, my co-workers in the Ben’s offices are now addicted (after listening to me talk about it constantly) and soon you will succumb to the glorious deliciousness that is Halo Top Ice Cream.

Halo Top is a brand of ice cream that’s catering to the crowd that wants to indulge on sweets, but doesn’t want to pack on the pounds at the same time.

This is why the company prints the calorie count for the entire pint on the front of the packaging, ranging from 240 calories up to 360 calories.

Even at 360 calories, it’s vastly superior to competitors in terms of calorie count. Take the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough as an example, clocking in at 360 calories in the Halo Top pint. A pint of the same flavor in the Ben & Jerry’s brand is 1,120 calories; slightly higher at 1,160 calories in the Haagen-Dazs brand.

You could literally eat 3 pints of Halo Top and it would still be fewer calories than 1 pint of a competitor. (Not saying that’s a good idea though!)

Of course, I’m not the only one that’s raving about it. There are people attempting 5-day and 10-day diets with only Halo Top ice cream. There are multiple attempts to rank flavors as well as compare taste to other brands.

Personally, some of my favorite flavors include Oatmeal Cookie, Birthday Cake, S’Mores, Peanut Butter Cup and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. The Ben’s EiC has given a big thumbs up to the Sea Salt Caramel and Red Velvet as well. One word of advice, when taking a pint out of the freezer, allow the ice cream to thaw for 10 minutes. Due to the mixture, Halo Top doesn’t put a ton of softeners in the ice cream. If you start to eat it right away, it will seem over-frozen and crumbly. Allowing it to thaw for a short period of time will make it 1,000 times better, offering that same creamy taste you are used to with other ice cream brands.

We all know that we need to eat better–lots of fruits and veggies, less processed foods and sugar, and the list can go on and on.  But anyone that’s made a serious attempt at leading a healthy food lifestyle can quickly run into a problem… it can be expensive!  It’s a bit of an odd predicament; after all, eating healthier and cooking your own meals is supposed to be cheaper than eating out, but nothing can really beat the Dollar Menus, especially in a money-tight college student’s eyes.

But eating healthy can be far more affordable than is seems at first glance.  You just have to make sure you’re looking in the right places for the right deals, and soon enough you’ll be eating healthy, wholesome meals every day of the week.  Here are some tips to get you started on your food journey:

Always, Always Check Sales

This should be a no-brainer, especially since sales are the key to saving money on anything, but many tend to forget to keep track of sales when they’re first stocking up on healthy foods… and that’s what really racks up the grocery bill!  Keeping a track of the sales of your local grocery and health stores sales and limiting purchases to sale items as much as possible is the biggest way to save on any type of grocery bill, let alone a healthy one!

Also, though, make sure to look at sales beyond groceries!  For example, places like CVS sell gallons of good quality milk, and there are sales on it from time to time, something that doesn’t happen often at a typical grocery store.  But, of course, make sure to keep distance in mind–if you have to drive twenty miles to save 10 cents on a can of tuna, it may not be worth it.

Make Sure To Buy In Season

Everyone knows that certain fruits and vegetables are grown during certain times of the year, but obviously most grocery stores will sell most produce year round.  However, there are many advantages to buying produce in season.  For one, the produce generally tastes better when grown in season than out.  But, considering this is a money saving article, there are money saving advantages to buying in season, too!  Since produce grown in season is simply easier to grow, it tends to both be cheaper and in higher quantites, which leads to more sales on the items.

If You Buy In Bulk, Make Sure You’ll Use It

Places like Costco and Sam’s Club are super popular for a reason–buying in bulk saves a lot of money in the long run!  However, there is a pitfall to buying in bulk… namely, not being able to use all of the food before it goes bad.  If you buy 5lbs of spinach for the price of 1lb, it may seem like a great deal… until you only use a tenth of the package before the rest of it wilts away.  It might seem more expensive to buy smaller quantities of goods, but if you’re cooking all of your food before it goes bad, then you’re not wasting food, and by extension, money.

For non perishable foods, buying in bulk is far more understandable, provided you have the room for it in your household.  Just make sure not to stock up on 50 cans of corn and not have room for anything else you need!

Meal Planning Is Your Friend

You might be thinking “yeah, these tips are all well and good, but what do I do if I suddenly need meat to cook?  How do I save money then?”  Well, the answer is to think ahead, and meal plan!  Meal planning has a load of benefits, such as making your work weeks easier when you don’t need to think about what to cook, but they also have a ton in value in saving you money.  If you plan ahead your meals for the week, you can go to the grocery store and get just the items you need–not the things you think you’ll need, or stuff you want.

It helps a lot to cut down on food waste, or forgetting/not having a certain ingredient when it comes time to cook.  And, if you plan your recipes around the sales of the week, you’ll both save money on buying only what you need, on the cheap!  And finally, making sure that you know what you’re going to make (and maybe even cooking it in advance on a day off) helps to stave off the question of “what am I going to eat for dinner?” and the answer end up being a no fuss fast food meal.

Also, don’t forget to check out meal planning apps for extra help. Look for apps like Paprika, PepperPlate and BigOven for great ideas for future recipes.

Don’t Forget Local Options

Going to the big chain grocery stores is all well and good, but if you’re looking for cheap or specialty items (especially produce), your best bet is going to be hitting up some of the local options in your area!  The most common local option is going to be your local farmers’ market, and is one of the best ways to get cheap, fresh produce.  You might even see some items you wouldn’t normally see in a supermarket!

Additionally, there tends to be at least a few ethnic food stores in town that has a good deal of hidden gems, if you’re willing to look.  For example, my nearby Asian food store has the best deals on most spices in town, and also carries a bunch of items that I would otherwise have to pay a premium on Amazon for.  Likewise, there is an Indian mart in my town that has some of the best herbs you can find, and they are a steal in terms of value.  don’t be afraid to search around and ask people for suggestions–you might find some really good stuff!

Cut your Spending with these Take your Lunch to Work Containers

Developed by former NASA engineer Mark Rober, the Heat Map Microwave is a new twist on a kitchen appliance that’s gone relatively unchanged for the last twenty years.

Utilizing an infrared camera built into the top of the microwave’s cook chamber, a LCD screen mounted on the front of the microwave displays the temperature of the food cooking inside the appliance.

Viewed in real-time on the LCD or within a smartphone application, the person cooking food within the microwave can see when their food is completely cooked. This can be particularly helpful if you are constantly burning food in a high wattage microwave or under-cooking in a low wattage microwave.

Interestingly, you can increase cooking time with the smartphone application, an ideal feature for anyone in a busy household. The microwave can also be programmed to stop cooking when a specific heat threshold is met, something of a fail-safe feature. Finally, the LCD screen can be used for browsing the Web to watch cooking videos on YouTube or read recipes.

Rober isn’t pursuing a crowd-funded Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign at this time. Instead, he has investors ready to start manufacturing his prototype, assuming there’s enough interest in the product. You can add your signature to the digital petition here.
