Enough cannot be said about the ridiculously cool design work of Fernando Reza, a graphic artist from Los Angeles. Just taking a look at his site, you will notice a variety of posters and other illustrations on the subject of various movies, television shows, video games and everything else related to pop culture.

This particular set of Mario Propaganda illustrations highlights the patriotism being promoted to residents of the Mushroom Kingdom, mainly a call to action to fight the dangerous menace known as Mario. You will see Goombas, Bullet Bill, Boo and a variety of other Super Mario enemies portrayed as heroes as they continue to battle the evil mustachioed plumber.

King Koopa must have his hands full cranking the propaganda machine in order to keep the Mushroom Kingdom united against Mario. Reza’s work was also used within the popular First Person Goomba video that details the typical life span of a Goomba.

With the number of games available on smartphones and tablets, dedicated handheld gaming devices aren’t quite as popular as they were in the days of the Nintendo DS, which sold more than 150 million devices.

Yet the right system will still appeal to gamers looking for the ability to game anywhere, anytime. Arriving on March 3, 2017 around the globe, we can’t wait to get our hands on Nintendo’s new system.

The Nintendo Switch specs include:

The controllers, called Joy-Con, can be detached and held vertically or horizontally. With the controllers attached to the screen, you can use it like any other handheld gaming console. But when you detach them, they send data wirelessly, giving you some versatility as to how you play. And with two of them, you can use two-player games. Or some games will require one player to use both controllers.

You’ll download games for the Switch from the Nintendo eShop or you’ll purchase games stored on cartridges that fit into the dock. The Nintendo Switch games that will be available at launch include:

This isn’t a complete list of Switch games, as dozens of other compatible games will be released throughout 2017.

Online gaming with fellow players will be available at some point in 2017, but details on that feature have been sparse. It’s also unclear whether Nintendo games players have purchased online in the past will work on Switch. Old Nintendo gaming cartridges will not work with Switch.

The Competition

Outside of smartphones and tablets, there isn’t much competition in the market for Switch from current handheld gaming consoles. The last major gaming company to release a fully handheld gaming device was Sony with the PlayStation Vita in early 2012. Nintendo last entered the mobile gaming market with the fully handheld 3DS in 2011 (pictured above).

However, Nintendo’s Wii U offered some mobile capabilities. The Wii U had a screen and controls in the handheld portion, or you could play with the Wii U console attached to a TV. But the guts of the Wii U lag well behind what’s been reported for the Switch. The Switch will use a much more powerful graphics processor and CPU versus Wii U, and Switch will have twice as much RAM.

Some reviewers have referred to Wii U as a trial run for the Switch, and that’s an easy conclusion to make considering how similar the two units look. (The Wii U did not have detachable controllers though.) And Wii U was not exactly popular, selling less than 15 million units worldwide. So Nintendo is hoping for much greater success with the more powerful Switch.

When compared to gaming on smartphones and tablets, Switch’s Nvidia GPU gives the mobile console a lot of dedicated graphics processing versus what a smartphone has. Factor in the quad-core CPU on Switch, and it simply has far more dedicated gaming power than what a smartphone or tablet can produce. This allows Switch to run more complex games with far more realistic graphics.

We’ll see how much the Switch appeals to mobile gamers. But if any company can figure out how to hit a home run in this market, it’s Nintendo. Only five gaming console systems have managed to top 100 million units in sales, and Nintendo has three of those. And two of them, the DS and Game Boy, are handheld units. So the Switch has a long legacy of success to live up to for Nintendo.

The ability to play old Nintendo system games on a retro-looking device — taking adults back to their childhoods — led to the unit being sold out in many places. If you want to purchase the device at a local brick and mortar store — and you don’t want to drive around town all day or make several phone calls to find the unit in stock — a shopping tracker can give you a clue as to when local stores have received a shipment of the NES Classic consoles.

Of the tracker options we researched, BrickSeek seemed to do the best job with finding NES Classic at the largest variety of brick and mortar stores. You will have to enter your local information, but the service can give you alerts when new units become available.

You also can check online stores for the NES Classic Edition console. As you’ll see once you start clicking on the links below, it still can be tough to find a console near the unit’s MSRP of $59.99. But prices are starting to drop since the holidays, so you shouldn’t have to pay more than triple the MSRP as you did in December.

Where Can I Find the NES Classic in stock?

Developed by artist and graphic designer Sam Milham, this series of illustrations transforms the main characters from Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros into chain-smoking, organic-eating, tattoo-sporting hipsters.

In addition to designing Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser and Toad as skinny hipsters, Milham added a line of text relevant to the characters — each oozing the classic hipster stereotype of avoiding anything that could possibly be classified as mainstream.

Also, Milham is attempting to turn the Mario illustration into a t-shirt over on TeePublic, a site that’s like a Kickstarter or Indiegogo for t-shirts. Super Mario Characters Redesigned as Absurd Hipsters

Developed by a group called 8-Bit Lit, the Super Mario coin block, interactive lamp turns on and off by tapping the bottom of the lamp and even includes the classic Super Mario coin sound after each tap. After eight taps of toggling the coin block lamp on and off, the sound will shift to the familiar 1-UP sound used when Mario gains an extra life.

The lamp is 6 inches by 6 inches by 6 inches in size and has been manufactured out of laser-cut plexiglass. Within the lamp, the designers have used energy-efficient LEDs in order to brighten up the room. At the top of the lamp, the designers have included a 11-foot power cord to hang the lamp from a hook on the ceiling and plug it into a standard power outlet. However, a custom acrylic stand can be purchased separately in order to place the Super Mario lamp on a nightstand in a bedroom or perhaps on an end table in a living room.

For the moment, the creators have put Etsy sales on hold in order to develop a Kickstarter campaign for the Super Mario coin block lamp. While the lamp was priced at $75 on Etsy, it’s likely the price could be significantly reduced with a sizable investment from Kickstarter backers and a mass production line. Anyone interested in purchasing a lamp can sign up for an email alert on the 8-Bit Lit site. Kickstarter backers usually have access to an early adopter price that can include a discount approximately 25 percent off the standard price.

However, if anyone wants to shell out $10,000 on an Etsy purchase of the lamp right now, the creators claim they will hand-deliver the lamp to your door while wearing tuxedos. Prior to adjusting the sales price to a ridiculous $10,000, the creators sold approximately 700 lamps which generated over $52,000 in sales.
