It’s that time of the week again… time for another fun Humble Bundle to make the gaming backlog cry while making your wallet smile for the low price you paid. well, provided you don’t decide to invest in the $80 tier this time around. The Very Positive bundle focuses on Steam games that have Very Positive review ratings on Steam. This bundle may not be the biggest around, but you can be sure you’re getting some quality titles.

$1 Tier

Rive: Wreck, Hack, Die, Retry

Some of this might be obvious from the game’s subtitle, but Rive is a difficult shooter in which you’ll rain bullet hell down on your enemies, hack robots, and die. A lot. Rive is challenging but has a satisfying reward loop that will keep you from getting too frustrated and coming back for more.

Neon Chrome

Neon Chrome is a shooter rogue-like title that isn’t very neon or chrome, but that’s quite alright for someone like me (bright colors can cuz me motion sickness). Go through procedurally levels, inevitably die, purchase permanent upgrades and try again. Any fan of rogue-likes will likely enjoy this title.

Dungeon Souls

Hope you like rogue-likes, as Dungeon Souls is another one for this $1 tier! Dungeon Souls, not to be confused with Dark Souls, does not have procedurally generated dungeons, but death does make you lose most of your progress. However, you do earn character bonuses and coins to get advantages in new runs, so there is always a sense of progress here.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition

Shadow of Mordor made huge waves when it originally released, with its Nemesis system giving players a real game rival to pursue and fight against. If you haven’t picked up this game, now’s a perfect chance, as the Game of the Year edition also comes with the Shadow of Mordor season pass.

Ultimate Chicken Horse

Ultimate Chicken Horse may be a weird name, but it’s also a great game to play with friends… well, good friends, as this is the type of party game that can ruin friendships. You and up to three friends work together to get past platforming challenges… but with a point system in place, there’s an incentive to screw over the people you’re supposed to work with in order get ahead.

Oxenfree

Oxenfree is an adventure type horror game. Think a bit like Until Dawn, but far less campy and more serious. Oxenfree pulls you in with its great writing and cast of characters, who have to survive when they somehow open a rift to another ghostly dimension.

Death Road to Canada

Oregon Trail meets rogue-like, Death Road to Canada has you controlling two players as they try to make the road trip from Florida to Canada in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. Obviously easier said than done, as you’ll run into a lot of opposition along the way. If you liked Organ Trail (no, I didn’t spell Oregon incorrectly this time), Death Road to Canada is worth a play.

Beat Cop

Beat Cop is a non-linear adventure game set in the 80s. You were framed with a murder, and as such lost job as a detective and instead are just a regular beat cop now. Try to find who framed you so you can get back to the big cases… but don’t get killed or neglect your day-to-day duties along the way.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Have you been meaning to pre-order Shadow of War on Steam, but haven’t gotten around to it yet? Your procrastination has paid off, as the $80 tier of this bundle will net you all of the above games, a pre-order for Middle-earth: Shadow of War (out next month), and an exclusive t-shirt. The price might seem a little steep at first glance, but if you factor in all the other games and the shirt, it’s not a bad deal at all if you planned on pre-ordering the game on PC in the first place!

Humble Very Positive Bundle 2

It’s time for another Humble Bundle! This bundle mashes up three big gaming companies–Capcom, Sega, and Atlus–to bring a bundle full of some high quality titles for a super cheap price. There is a mix of genres in here as well, so there’s likely to be a few games that will appeal to anyone. Let’s get into the list, shall we?

Rollers of the Realm

Rollers of the Realm is an odd mix of a pinball game and… RPG? Well, we’ve gotten a mix of RPG and Match-3 games in the past, so this just seems like the natural evolution. Rollers of the Realm is worth a try just for the interesting mashup alone.

Zeno Clash 2

Zeno Clash 2 is the sequel to the original first person brawler. Zeno Clash 2 has a large and unique world to explore, and is sure to be worth your time as one of many games you get for a single dollar. While Zeno Clash 2 did not get the best critical reception, there is still plenty to enjoy here.

Sonic Adventure 2

Who doesn’t know what Sonic Adventure 2 is at this point? If you don’t own a Steam copy of this Dreamcast and GameCube copy of this 3D Sonic title now’s your chance to grab one at an extremely cheap price. Fun fact, Humble Bundle did not have a video for this game so please enjoy an official SEGA stream of Pumpkin Hill instead.

Bionic Commando

A sequel of the NES original, Bionic Commando takes some grappling, exploding action into the 3D world. Taking place 10 years after the original game, this new Bionic Commando is darker and grittier.

Citizens of Earth

Citizens of Earth attempts to recapture the quirkiness of Earthbound in a new game. Starring the Vice President of the world, return to your hometown in this RPG and get to the bottom of some strange happenings. Citizens of Earth is overall a light-hearted adventure.

Renegade Ops Collection

Renegade Ops is an over the top, co-op action game with an arcade flair. The Renegade Ops Collection includes the main game, the Coldstrike Campaign, and the Reinforcement Pack which has two new playable characters.

Sonic Generations Collection

Sonic Generations is the Sonic title that successfully melded the series’ 3D and 2D playstyles, and ended up being one of the most critically accepted Sonic titles in years, at that time. Control Classic and Modern Sonic as you work through reimagined stages throughout the series’ history. The Sonic Generations Collection also includes the DLC Casino Night level.

Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4 is a well-known game, one that many cite as what helped to revitalize the horror genre. If you haven’t had the chance to play this classic yet, now’s the perfect chance with the PC port! It’s hard not to recommend this title given its high status among gamers.

Dead Rising

The Dead Rising series has gone on for a while, but for some reason Capcom just loves going back to Frank West. Well, if you’re wondering why, now’s your chance to find out with the original Dead Rising! He’s covered wars, you know… and zombie attacks.

Motorsport Manager was originally a mobile title, but it was re-released on Steam with updated graphics and more. Step away from the racing itself and step into a management role, making sure your racers have what they need to win.

Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition

The Devil May Cry series may have gotten some flack with its most recent entry (a re-imagining of the series), but you can’t go wrong with Devil May Cry 4. The Special Edition gives you plenty more playable characters and the same depth of action that makes the series so popular in the first place.

Humble Capcom x Sega x Atlus Bundle

Humble Bundle introduces a fair amount of cost-saving bundles monthly. Earlier this month there was the rare console bundle, but Humble Bundle focuses mainly on PC and mobile games. This latest bundle, the Humble Jumbo Bundle 9, promises a decent number of Steam titles to grab, with even more coming into the Beat the Average tier next week.

With that, let’s get right into the offerings:

Flame in the Flood

Flame in the Flood is a survival game, though it isn’t as difficult as say, Don’t Starve or other games in the genre. The main draw of Flame in the Flood is working with the river and how it can save (or kill) you, and keeping your raft in good shape to sail the river.

Infested Planet

Infested Planet is a tactical RTS game, that pits you against tens of thousands of aliens. In order to survive, you’ll have to build defenses and use the Marines to take the alien threat out. Of course, this is easier said than done, as the aliens have both the advantage in numbers and other abilities that make eradicating them difficult.

Human: Fall Flat

Human: Fall Flat is a physics based puzzle game, perfect for those looking for a new puzzle game to delve into. You’re stuck in a surreal landscape, and the only way to escape is to solve the puzzles that are presented to you.

Beat the Average Tier

Verdun

Verdun is a difficult, squad based multiplayer first person shooter. Set during the battle of Verdun in 1916, this game explores World War I, which isn’t as often shown in game form as World War II. It is also rather unforgiving, which makes sense given the setting.

Samorost 3

The Samorost adventure games are well-known as high quality titles, and Samorost 3 is no exception. With a funky world that’s fun to explore, Samorost 3 is sure to please–and you don’t need to play the first two games to enjoy this one, either.

Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide

Includes Drachenfels DLC and Razorfang Poison Item

If you like Warhammer, then this a perfect title for you and some friends to play! Vermintide is a 4 player co-operative action title, similar to games like Left 4 Dead. The game sticks to its source material well, and offers plenty of incentive for replayability… but it’s hard to play unless you have a 4 player group set up, as the AI for computer replacements leave much to be desired.

American Truck Simulator

Some might think a truck driving simulator is by no means a ‘good’ or ‘real’ game, but those people would be wrong! American Truck Simulator is quite a good time for those who… well, just want to drive trucks. Like Euro Truck Simulator, America Truck Simulator takes you on the highways of the US, where you’ll be able to take in the wonderful landscapes and landmarks that the country has to offer.

This is another solid bundle from Humble Bundle this month! Will you be grabbing it?

Humble Jumbo Bundle 9

The Humble Bundle usually focus on Steam and Android games, but every once and a while we get a console bundle. Now is one of those times with the Humble 2K PlayStation Bundle, with a slew of PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita titles for your playing pleasure.  Let’s get right into the good stuff:

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Plus (Vita)

XCOM: Enemy Unknown made some big waves when it first released on the PS3 and PC, and this portable version is a port of this popular game.  This version, as it may not be readily easy to tell, also includes the content from the XCOM: Enemy Unknown expansion.

Civilization Revolution 2 Plus (Vita)

Civilization Revolution 2 is a simplified version of the 4x Civilization series, and the tweaks make it far more accessible on a handheld console like the Vita.  This Plus version adds new leaders, scenarios, and units over the original version.

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified (PS3)
Includes all DLC

While XCOM is more well known now as a strategy series, but The Bereau: XCOM Declassified is a shooter in that same series.  The Humble Bundle version of this PS3 game also comes with all the DLC, making this the definitive experience.

Evolve (PS4)

Evolve has four human players going against one gigantic monster, trying to work together to defeat the enemy that can so easily defeat them.  The player playing the monster can work to evolve their character, making them more deadly and able to wipe out the four human team.  Remember that you need PlayStation Plus in order to play online on the PS4.

XCOM: Enemy Within (PS3)

XCOM: Enemy Within is an expansion of sorts to Enemy Unknown, but the game is standalone so there’s no worries about being unable to play it if you don’t have the PlayStation 3 version of Enemy Unknown.  Enemy Within really ramps up the difficulty with scenarios that can affect your ability to defeat the alien threat, particularly because the humans still can’t stop fighting long enough to unify and fight the common enemy.

BioShock (PS3)

BioShock is a very well known first person shooter, with a fascinating narrative explored in the ruins of the utopic Rapture.  If you haven’t had a chance to experience this iconic game yet, now’s the perfect chance to pick it up with a slew of other titles.

Battleborn (PS4)
Includes Platinum VC

Battleborn is essentially Gearbox’s answer to Overwatch.  The title has recently gone free to play, but the bundle includes that Platinum VC, which gives you some extra goodies.

Borderlands (PS3)

Borderlands has become a well-known series for mixing first person shooter and RPG elements into a crazy game with its own unique setting.  This version of Borderlands is on the PS3 too, so no need for PlayStation Plus to play online.

Borderlands 2 Ultimate Edition (PS3)

Not only do we get the first Borderlands, but its sequel, too.  Borderlands 2 improves on many aspects of the original title, and this Ultimate Edition comes with a ton of the DLC.  It’s valued at $100 on the PlayStation Store, so seeing it here in this bundle is a hell of a deal.

Mafia II (PS3)

Mafia II has you playing as a gangster working through the ranks of the Mafia crime families, clawing and killing your way to the top.  This is an open world game similar to the Grand Theft Auto series, and released to critical acclaim on the PlayStation 3.

Spec Ops: The Line (PS3)

Spec Ops: The Line may seem like a typical military shooter, but it manages to impress gamers with a plot that really makes you question what you’re doing.  It’s interesting to have to face what is essentially second nature at this point, and the truth may leave you unsettled.

$20 Tier

XCOM 2 (PS4)

The sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, XCOM 2 takes the series to the current generation with updated visuals and gameplay.  Even at the $20 tier, XCOM 2 is a relatively recent release and is a steal at that price… not to mention all the other games you’ll get with it!

Everything in the Humble 2K PlayStation Bundle

Another month, another great Humble Mobile Bundle to add to the gaming backlog.  This time around, it’s a simple theme: Roguelikes, the super hard genre of dungeon exploring and item management based on the classic game Rogue.  Given it’s a genre more about thinking through moves and strategy than twitch reactions, it’s a great genre for the less precise controls of a smartphone.  Let’s see what the bundle has to offer:

$1 Tier

Desktop Dungeons

Desktop Dungeons is a bit of a classic in terms of rougelikes–as its name suggests, it began as simple desktop game, with one screen to work through strategically.  The core of the game stays the same, but now it’s on your phone!  It’s perfect for idle moments while waiting in line or something similar.

bit Dungeon I

bit Dungeon is a real-time roguelike, so the enemies aren’t going to wait for you to come to them before attacking.  However, bit Dungeon is a very simplistic game, as there are not special skills or anything of the like you have to activate on the fly.  Just get in there and start slashing!

bit Dungeon II

Being a sequel, bit Dungeon II offers a bunch of improvements over the original game, including nicer graphics and more varied looking locales.  Judging by this PC trailer, it’s clearly made for mobile controls, too!

$5 Tier

Pixel Heroes: Byte & Magic

Pixel Heroes is a very content heavy roguelike that’ll give you a lot of bang for your buck.  There are three campaigns to work through, 30 classes to unlock, and just a whole bunch of stuff to work through.  This is definitely the game of the bundle that will keep you entertained for hours.

Road Not Taken

Road Not Taken is a beautiful roguelike puzzle game, in which you’re trying to save children that have gotten lost in the woods.  Each area is randomly generated, and it’s of utmost importance to try and save as many kids as possible, as it affects the world around you.

Dungelot: Shattered Lands

Dungelot is pretty similar to Desktop Dungeons at its core, with a different coat of paint.  Like Desktop Dungeons, you tackle single rooms, but Dungelot is a bit more connected with its world, and the rooms are a bit smaller so they’re quite a bit easier to clear… not that Dungelot is easy, of course.

Heroes of Loot 2

Heroes of Loot 2 stands out from the other roguelikes by allowing you to control two characters at once.  Because of that, you can fine tune your character choices a bit more to your playstyle, as you can choose what you want to focus on in terms of damage dealing and taking.

Sproggiwood

Most roguelikes don’t have really in-depth plots due to the permadeath nature of the genre, but Sproggiwood is a story driven roguelike to enjoy.  Based on Finnish lore, you’re a prisoner of Sproggi and must follow his orders to be free… but with a civilization on the line, it’s up to you how you want to handle your path to freedom.

Star Chindy: SciFi Roguelike

Star Chindy definitely stands out here as it’s quite a bit different from the rest of the games in the bundle.  Star Chindy is a rogue-like, but it also has real-time ship and unit battles, making this almost feel like a strategy title with higher stakes.  It also has some pretty advanced 3D graphics for a mobile game for its genre, so if your phone can handle it, it’s worth giving a try for the spectacle alone.

June 2017 Humble Mobile Bundle: Roguelikes

When most people think of mobile games, some common genres will likely come to mind.  Puzzle games are abundant due to their pick up and play style, and lend themselves well to touch controls.  A lot of turn based games also fit this bill, as by their nature can overcome touch screen burdens by simply not forcing any can of finesse on how you need to tap the screens.

One genre many aren’t fond of on mobile devices, however, are platformers.  Platformers by their nature require timing and skillful button presses… and touch screen controls that are even a bit off can ruin the entire game.  But, this month’s Humble Mobile Bundle brings together a bunch of great platformers for a staggeringly cheap price.  Let’s look at these Epic Platformers:

Devious Dungeon

Devious Dungeon is a relatively simple action platformer–explore up to five worlds that are randomized, gather loot and kill baddies.  The controls are simple enough to make playing with a touch screen easy, and the seemingly bite sized playthroughs and replayability makes it a model mobile title.

Devious Dungeon 2 is much like the first–five randomized worlds to explore, loot to grab.  This time around, though, you can pick from three different classes, with their own playstyles.  I nice small upgrade for when you finish with the first game.

Eggggg – The Platform Puker

Well, this… this is certainly an odd one.  The hero of this tale is violently, and I mean violently allergic to eggs, as eating them will make the poor boy projectile vomit.  However, Gilbert needs to use this reaction in order to escape his horribly mean aunt and get to a birthday party.  Surely all that vomiting isn’t great for his system, but we all do dumb things as kids right?

Note: The Beat the Average seems to be hovering right under $5 for the most part… you might as well go for the $5 tier while you’re at it!

Gunbrick

Gunbrick is more on the puzzle platformer side of things than a more strict platformer.  Your character controls the titular Gunbrick, which seems to be some kind of moving… cube.  This particular title was built specfically for swiping mobile controls, so there are no virtual buttons to press with this one!  It seems fitting with the more puzzle oriented approach.

RunGunJumpGun

RunGunJumpGun is one of the more intense games in this bundle, offering difficult gameplay that still works great with the mobile platform.  You shoot your gun to help propel yourself around the stages, killing enemies and navigating through tricky dangerous corridors.  This is certainly a unique experience!

Retsnom

Retsnom, on the other hand, is a puzzle platformer with a very nice twist to it.  The goal is to mirror parts of stages to get past obstacles, in hopes of finding the cure to your daughter’s zombie illness.  It’s a little hard to explain, make sure to watch the trailer to this one!

Never Alone: Ki Edition

Never Alone is best known for its source material–the Iñupiat (native Alaskans), a subject and culture rarely touched upon in video games.  You control two characters through this puzzle platformer to search for the reason of an endless blizzard.  Well worth a playthrough due to its unique origins!

Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons

Brothers, like the other games in the $5 tier, is a critically acclaimed platformer that has made its way to mobile devices.  In order to save an ailing father, two brothers set out to find the mythical Water of Life, and they must rely on each other to make it through the ordeal.  Brothers in particular is a very strong narrative experience, and is a must play if you’re looking for a strong plot in your platformer.

Limbo

Limbo made itself well known a number of years ago via the Xbox Live Arcade, but the dark platformer has since made its debut on other platforms, including mobile.  If you haven’t yet experienced this gem of a game, now’s the perfect time–it’s a disturbing, yet very noteworthy title.

Grim Fandango Remastered

Grim Fandango is a Double Fine game, a developer well known for titles such as Day of the Tentacle and Psychonauts.  As such, Grim Fandango carries a high pedigree, and it delivers.  It’s a very interesting and humorous take on The Day of the Dead, an Hispanic holiday that honors the dearly departed.

Kathy Rain

Kathy Rain stars the titular Kathy Rain, a young woman who returns to her home town after a long absence.  Of course, everything isn’t as it once seems, and it’s up to her to uncover the dark secrets of Conwell Springs.

Machinarium

Machinarium is one of the many adventure titles from Amanita Games.  In this title, you control a robot that wants to save his friends, and the setting and graphics are extremely beautiful and vibrant, perfect for a mobile title.

Her Story

Her Story is an indie darling, winning many awards since its release in 2015.  Her Story has an interesting setup–you’re looking through old police interview videos of a wife during her husband’s disappearance.  Using keys words to eventually unravel the tale, the fantastic live action acting really brings this story alive.

Sorcery! 4

While this is the fourth and final title of the Sorcery! series, you can begin this one if you wish.  Based off of the books of the same name, this adventure game is closer to an RPG, with battles and multiple paths to explore, Sorcery is bound to entertain.

Burly Men At Sea

Burly Men At Sea starts off simply enough–three men find an odd map, and they set out to explore the world around them.  This title borrows heavily from Scandinavian lore, and has a very simple and clean art styles.

Samorost 3

Another title from Amanita Games, Samorost 3 is another title that involves exploring and unusual and fantastical setting.  While it is the third game of the series, none of the titles really have a deep narrative that you’ll miss–it’s all about discovering a strange new world.

Lumino City

Lumino City is the sequel to a game called Lume… and while the other two titles do not need the previous entries to enjoy them, Lumino City is better played after Lume itself.  And it’s worth it too, expanding on Lume’s story into epic proportions.

April 2017 Humble Mobile Bundle: Great Adventures

It’s been up for a little while now, but the currently running Nintendo Humble Bundle is still adding up the goods. Donate more than $10 and you’ll get codes for two more indie titles on Nintendo consoles on top of the nine already up for grabs. Be quick though, because the Humble Nindie Bundle ends on June 9.

As with every Humble Bundle, a person chooses the amount he or she donates to charity (from $1 and up) and receives a number of codes for downloadable games. Give an amount above the average donation (which sits at $9.20 as of publication time) and you’ll get even more games. This is the first time they’re doing it for consoles, namely the Nintendo eShop on both the Wii U and 3DS.

The two new games to the bundle, which, as mentioned, are only garnered from a $10 donation or more, are Wii U games Stealth Inc. 2 and SteamWorld Dig (also on 3DS). They’re both quality titles, the latter a crisply designed 2D mining adventure the recipient of many accolades.

For any donation, you’ll receive the metroidvania Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition on the Wii U and Woah Dave! and Mighty Switch Force! for the 3DS (apparently an exclamation point was a pre-requisite).

Hit the average donation number and you’ll also get The Fall, Sportsball and Bit.Trip Presents… Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien for Wii U and Moon Chronicles, Gunman Clive and OlliOlli for the 3DS. OlliOlli is also available for Wii U.  

Frankly, they’re all games worthy of your time. But, for my money, Bit.Trip Presents… Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien is an all time great rhythm platformer and OlliOlli has single-handedly made virtual skateboarding relevant again.

The total value of the eleven games is $115., according to Humble Bundle. Let’s say you grab them all for a solid $10. That’s about a 91 percent discount, and you get to feel good about yourself. Why are you still here?
