Best Wire-Free Experience: Oculus Quest 2

Hands down, the Oculus Quest 2 is one of the best VR experiences to introduce new users to the entertainment value of virtual reality games. Available in two storage size options (128GB and 256GB), the Quest 2 is an all-in-one virtual reality headset that doesn’t require PC connectivity. It comes with two touch controllers (powered by AA batteries), a spacer in case you have glasses and offers 1,832 by 1,920 resolution (per eye).

Battery life is a bit short, at 2.5 hours. However, an hour of playtime is probably the average length of time before the headset gets to heavy to wear. There are a number of accessories you can add to your Quest 2 to make it more comfortable to wear, in addition to extending the battery life by several hours.

During Black Friday 2020, a couple of the Oculus headsets were discounted between $20 to $50 and a few discounted game bundles hit the Oculus store. Look for similar discounts this year.

Best VR for Console Gamers: PlayStation VR

Ideal for anyone that already owns a PS4 or PS5, the PSVR system has a large catalog of games and one of the highest refresh rates at 120 Hz. Downsides include one of the lowest resolution headsets on this list, 960 by 1,080 resolution (per eye) and a limited userbase for multiplayer games.

Games can be somewhat expensive, but sales occur significantly more often than games on the Oculus store. Some players have mentioned issues with motion controller tracking and issues sealing out light.

On the flip side, this is one of the least expensive VR headsets and often comes bundled with games. During Black Friday 2020, many bundles were discounted as low as $199. In addition, Sony is offering 3 free VR games with a PlayStation Plus subscription.

Best VR for PC Gamers: Valve Index

While tethered to a PC, the Valve Index offers one of the best visual experiences due to a 120Hz refresh rate (and a 144Hz experimental mode). The Valve Index also offers some of the most comfortable to wear headsets and is compatible with some lower-tier graphics cards.

The Rift S offers 1,440 by 1,600 resolution (per eye) as well as 37.5mm off-ear speakers. Look for sales on the Valve Index  around Black Friday, but it will still be expensive compared to an Oculus headset.

It’s also the only headset with access to Half-Life Alex, one of the most impressive VR games on any platform.

2020 Holiday Shipping Deadlines for 80+ Major Retailers

We know trying to snag deals on Thanksgiving and Black Friday can be overwhelming. Some retailers, like Kohl’s and Newegg, already rolled out Black Friday prices as of Monday. Some retailers, like Best Buy, are rolling out deals to members of their Elite shopping program.

However, there are a number of tips you can rely on in order to snag some of the best deals of the year. We’ve put together a list of ten helpful suggestions to help you save money and grab those deals before everyone else.

1. Timing is everything!

The best online deals start the night before Thanksgiving (Wednesday). While stores schedule their Thanksgiving Day deals to begin at midnight EST (9 p.m. PST), many retailers will jump the gun and start an hour or two earlier. Start keeping an eye out for those doorbusters around 7 p.m. PST on Wednesday; an ideal task for mobile devices.

2. Prep your accounts in advance!

There’s nothing worse than missing out on an amazing online doorbuster because you had to set up a new account with shipping / payment details. If you plan on shopping at a specific retailer this year, visit a day or two before Thanksgiving / Black Friday and update all your details. Around 6 p.m. PST, go log into that account and you will be ready to quickly make a purchase before online doorbuster inventory runs out.

3. Try adding doorbusters early!

This trick will vary between online retailers. Add the doorbuster to your cart on Wednesday night and simply refresh the page to see if the price drops in your cart. This could end up saving those previous seconds that will help you snag the deal before inventory sells out. However, you should also open a second tab in your browser to refresh the price on the main product page just in case it doesn’t update in the cart.

4. If something sells out, don’t give up!

Starting Wednesday night through Friday night, the most aggressive doorbuster deals will happen at random times online. Stores often plan on having inventory saved for specific times of the day. In addition, online retailers will often compete with price drops. Amazon may lower a price on a product and sell out within an hour. However, Target or Walmart may decide to price match it later in the day.

5. Don’t forget the little guys!

While massive retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Target and Best Buy are certainly great places to score online Black Friday deals, some smaller retailers have online deals just as good, sometimes even better (and less likely to sell out!) In the last couple years, Staples had some excellent cheap laptop deals, and 6pm had the best prices on shoes and apparel. Other retailers to keep an eye on include the Microsoft Store, OfficeMax, Google Shopping and Kohl’s.

6. Choose gift card bundles wisely!

Many of the most popular items won’t necessarily be on sale with a major discount, but will come with a hefty store gift card. This is especially true for trendy electronics like the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Bose/Beats headphones, GoPro cameras, Nest Thermostat and pretty much anything Apple related.

Retailers are banking on the fact that many gift cards go completely unused. Make sure you choose a gift card deal for a retailer where you regularly shop. For example, Target or Amazon are likely to have tons of other items from your shopping list, while a gift card for a retailer like Best Buy might not be as useful.

7. Activate your credit card’s promotional discount!

Many cards offer discounts specific to seasonal periods, but require activation to use. For instance, Chase Freedom offers 5% back at department stores, Paypal or Chase Pay on purchases during Q4. Discover offers 5% cash back on Amazon, Target and Walmart.com during Q4. American Express offers store-specific coupons (Ex. Spend $50, get $20 credit) all year round. All of these have to be activated though by logging onto your account and clicking the activation link. Here’s a complete list for this year.

8. Take advantage of price-matching programs!

Target recently announced an expansion of the retailer’s price matching policy, now including stores like Amazon, Walmart.com, Sam’s Club and Costco. Walmart is attempting to do something similar, but internally price matching items. If you read up on price matching before checking out, you may end up combining your price matched item with other discounts, like credit card rewards.

9. Always check for coupons!

Before checking out online, do a quick Google search for coupon codes (or in the Ben’s deal box description). You’d be surprised at how many online merchants routinely have 10% to 20% off codes available, and most of the time they stack with sale prices and other promotions. Examples of stores that almost always have coupon codes (even if they’re not advertised on the site) include Kohl’s and Macy’s.

10. Save 5% to 15% on top of sale prices using discounted gift cards!

Most frequently found on eBay during the holiday season, discount gift cards will typically sell up to 20% off. While this practice requires a predictive strategy to deciding where you will eventually spend your holiday purchasing dollars, it’s great for stores that you constantly visit every year for holiday shopping.

If you are out shopping this weekend, you may be in luck depending on what you are shopping for due to Columbus Day sales. The majority of Columbus Day sales are usually advertised as four-day sales between Friday and Monday.

What to Buy During Columbus Day Sales?

Summer Seasonal Products

This list includes patio furniture, pool equipment, grills, camping gear, hiking gear, etc… With the summer season officially over, retailers have already started to move seasonal summer items out of stores using clearance sales. You won’t find a ton of items in stock, but you will find deep discounts.

Apparel

Columbus Day sales are the last big push on clothing sales until mid to late November. Look for deep discounts on summer apparel and average sales on fall clothing. Avoid purchasing winter clothing as that will be a premium until late February / early March. You will find significant discounts on jeans and shoes, partly due to leftover inventory from back-to-school sales. Look to Macy’s and Kohl’s for great deals.

Labor Day Leftovers

This usually includes mattresses, luggage and home decor products. Many products in these categories will see similar discounts to Labor Day. Look to retailers like Mattress Firm, Macy’s and the online mattress companies for discounts. Overstock and eBay have excellent luggage deals. Target and Wayfair will have solid discounts on home decor items.

What to Avoid During Columbus Day Sales?

Electronics

November is the month for deals on laptops, televisions, headphones, portable devices, etc… (Although deals may start to trickle out as early as the week of October 27.) Look for flash sales during early November from Target, Best Buy and Amazon as well as tons of sales from all major retailers as we move into Black Friday.

Video Games / Toys

The last week of November will have the best deals on video games and the first two weeks of December traditionally has the best deals on toys. However, there’s roughly 1 week less of shopping time between Black Friday and Christmas (compared to last year), so don’t be surprised if toy deals start popping up even earlier.

Large Appliances / Small Appliances

Mid to late November is always a good time to buy large appliances. Consumers will see strong sales at stores like Home Depot, Lowe’s and Sears. Wait for the last week of November for small appliances and look to retailers like Kohl’s, Target and Macy’s for the strongest sales.

Toys have become kind of ridiculous. It seems every holiday season they have to top the previous year by being bigger, noisier, flashier, and with that, more expensive. And while traditional toy commercials are becoming a thing of the past as more people switch to streaming only TV, YouTube is bigger than ever, with an insane amount of child “influencers” telling your kids this toy is the best one ever.

Unicorns are all the rage right now. There’s unicorn stuffed animals, and unicorn dolls, and a really weird unicorn that poops slime that my daughter has unsuccessfully begged for at the store. But the coolest unicorn toy I’ve seen this season is the UBTECH JIMU Unicornbot. Not only can kids code this mythical robot, they get to build it. It has 440 pieces that snap together like LEGOs, with no tools required. Did I mention it has a programmable LED color-changing horn? Because it does, and it looks awesome.

Best Dinosaur Toy

Along with unicorns, dinosaurs are enjoying massive popularity right now (thanks in part to the new Jurassic World movies). If you’ve got a little dino lover, there is no question they will want the Fisher-Price Imaginext Jurassic World Jurassic Rex. This thing is massive; way bigger in person than it looks in the pictures. We walked by a display at Target the other day and my two year old just about lost his mind. But besides being big, this toy makes the list because Imaginext has yet to disappoint in our house. They make stuff that actually gets played with, and that is hard to destroy. Early reviews are great, with one writing, “I honestly did not expect toy this large but I was thrilled and so were the kids. Their father was just as eager to play with it!”

Best Building Toy

Obviously the best building toy is always going to be a LEGO set, the question is which LEGO set! There are a lot of new Harry Potter sets this year, including the awesome LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Express ($80). There are also some pretty cool LEGO Ideas sets out this season, like the LEGO Ideas Pop-Up Book ($70; the first-ever buildable pop-up book), and LEGO Ideas Voltron ($180). There’s also the giant new LEGO Star Wars Betrayal at Cloud City, stocking stuffer-priced at $350.

The LEGO BrickHeadz Go Brick Me Set ($30) allows you to build custom BrickHeadz that look like people you know, and could be pretty funny gifts for friends and coworkers.

Another option to think about is a LEGO “rental” subscription like NetBricks ($24 to $39/month). I’m thinking about getting one of these for my 6 year old Master Builder (who enjoys the building process more than anything else), because we are running out of room to store all the sets he completes!

Best Learning Toy for Preschoolers

It’s hard to find toys for preschoolers without buttons, sounds, screens etc. The Little Tikes Stem Jr. Wonder Lab is packed with fun and educational features without that other stuff. It has a place for kids to conduct STEM “experiments” using common household items, a circuit center, a ball maze, and more. For how big it is, and how many pieces it comes with, it’s also pretty affordable–we’ve already seen it drop below $75 on Ben’s.

Best Ride-On Toy

If there is one thing on this list I wish I would have had as a kid (or, um like right now), it would for sure be the Step2 Hot Wheels Extreme Thrill Coaster. This thing is massive–it comes with 14 feet of track, so you’ll definitely need a big chunk of space! My kids have a smaller, less “extreme” version (the Step2 Disney Pixar Cars 3 Up & Down Roller Coaster) and absolutely love it.

It’s not cheap, but we have already seen it as low as $202 on Ben’s, and it’s a gift that can/should be given to multiple children.

The Anki Overdrive: Fast & Furious Edition Starter Set makes the list the second year in a row. While Anki hasn’t released a whole new starter set, they’ve added a new line of of expansion cars, as well as Supertrucks that are three times as big, come with new games, and can be played in intense-sounding “rage mode.”

There have been a few other attempts at matching this app-controlled racing game (Scalextric, Hot Wheels A.I.), but Anki continues to be the most popular and get the best reviews all around.

The Marvel Black Panther Vibranium Power FX Mask has a whole lot of cool factor for the price tag (has been as low as $11 on Ben’s). Black Panther was in not one but two hugely popular movies recently (the standalone Black Panther film and Avengers: Infinity War), so any kid should be excited to find this one under the tree. It has flip-down lens, light effects, and near-perfect reviews at Amazon, Target, etc.

Best Toy You’ll Drive Yourself Crazy Trying to Find

It gives me great pleasure to include a Muppets toy on this list. The Disney Junior Muppet Babies Wocka Wocka Feature Fozzie is one of the few toys to come out since the recent Muppet Babies reboot, and you can’t find it in stock anywhere right now. He sings songs, tells jokes, “wiggles” when he laughs, and looks all-around adorable. Be wary of third party sellers on Amazon and eBay who are selling it for way over MSRP.

Holiday Gift Guide 2018: Toys That Live Up to the Hype

Announced in a blog post earlier today, the electronics retailer is bringing back free holiday shipping starting today and running through Christmas Day.

There’s no minimum purchase required to qualify for the free shipping and there’s no exclusions on anything listed on the site. Typically, only orders $35 and up would qualify for free shipping.

Beyond shipping to your residence, Best Buy also offers free in-store pickup (when available) in which orders are made available within 60 minutes. If you are visiting a Best Buy store, look for dedicated parking for in-store pickup close to the store front.

Best Buy free shipping (no min purchase) starts October 29

Announced earlier today, Target will roll out free shipping (no minimum purchase) on November 1 for the holiday shopping season. Somewhat identical to last year, the company will end the promotion before Christmas on December 22. The company will not revive free holiday shipping through the new year, like during 2016.

Target has not released any information on early deals yet. Last year, the retailer specifically targeted weekends for special promotions. Target experimented with the concept last year, specifically offering Black Friday pricing on select products earlier in the month for a short 2 to 3 day period.

Beyond free holiday shipping, Target is also promoting same day delivery with Shipt. There’s an option for a 2-week trial membership of the service, but it will require a $99 yearly fee to continue using the service beyond the first two weeks. Target is expanding the drive up pickup service to 1,000 stores by the end of October as well. Orders are typically ready within an hour and delivered to a customer’s car within minutes of arriving at the store.

Target’s Free Holiday Shipping starts on Thursday, November 1

This week, former retail powerhouse Sears filed for bankruptcy protection due to a $134 million debt payment that the company wasn’t able to pay off. Sears management is planning on continuing to operate roughly 500 locations as well as the online site Sears.com during the bankruptcy process.

At the time of the filing, Sears has about 700 Sears & KMart stores still in operation. It plans to close 46 locations (previously announced) by November and is planning to close an additional 142 locations before the end of the year (likely operating the stores through the holiday season).

This is already down from 1000 stores still in operation earlier this year. The company currently has 68,000 employees, 32,000 of whom are full-time. That’s down from 89,000 employees as of Feb 2018 and down from 178,000 employees as of Jan 2016.

Company management is going to attempt to look for a buyer during this process. If a buyer isn’t found, Sears may take the path of other retail brands like  Toys R Us, RadioShack and Sports Authority.

Be aware that Sears may pursue a more aggressive sales strategy for the holiday season. Sears is in need of a robust holiday season after sales fell sharply at both Sears and KMart locations during Q4 2017. Watch for promotions with “Shop My Way” points as well as increased discounts. Sears edges closer to bankruptcy, will close 142 more stores

If you are looking for deals this holiday weekend, there are definitely certain product categories that you should keep an eye out for. Regarding start times, Kristin Cook, Managing Editor of Ben’s Bargains, says “Early Memorial Day sales started on the 18^th this year, but most sales will kick off starting on Monday the 21st and run through Memorial Day weekend.”

Here are our picks for what not to buy on Memorial Day (and what to buy instead).

Gas Grills

Any sales you see on grills on Memorial Day will be a pittance compared to the sales at the end of summer. On average, you will see discounts on gas grills ranging up to 20% during Memorial Day sales, not the 40% to 75% sales that will pop up as the summer season draws to a close post-August.

What to Buy Instead: Appliances: Typical to most major holidays, retailers like Home Depot, Lowes and Sears offer discounts between 30 to 50 percent on on major appliances like refrigerators and washer/dyer combos. Look for discounts on small appliances as well, which should be discounted at the highest percentage until Labor Day. Price match retailers against each other for competitive pricing and look for expanded discounts related to store credit cards.

Summer Clothing Lines

These clothing lines have just been released and won’t have much more than a 20% to 40% discount off the retail price. Swimwear, in particular, will be much cheaper toward the end of the summer.

What to Buy instead: Spring / Winter Clothing Lines. You will find discounts ranging from 50% to 90% on Spring clothing lines from retailers sure as 6pm, Sierra Trading Company, Old Navy, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Target, REI, Kohl’s and other clothing retailers. It’s a great time to get a deal on next year’s winter coat at closeout prices.

Pool Supplies / Floats

This is the season when everyone is getting their pool back in order, thus discounts on pool gear will be minimal. The same goes for all the fun toys that you toss into your pool; floats, beach balls, etc… Discounts on these products usually hit as the busy summer season, typically late August / early September.

What to Buy Instead: Travel Deals: Instead of outfitting your own pool, book a deal at a hotel where you can lay by their pool. We typically see deals ranging from 40 to 60 percent off hotels and flights during Memorial Day weekend sales. Look to sites like Expedia, Kayak and Travelocity for weekend sales.

General Electronics

Memorial Day is usually an extremely poor holiday for deals on laptops, televisions and anything made by Apple. Laptops will go on sale in late July / early August with back-to-school sales, televisions will go on sale as football season starts, then prices will drop even more in November. As for Apple, look to September for iPhone discounts and November for MacBook discounts.

What to Buy Instead: Mattresses. This is a killer month to spend money on a new bed rather than what screen you will be staring at while falling asleep. You will see mattress sales ranging from 40% up to 80% on Memorial Day at retailers such as Sears, Overstock.com, Macy’s and smaller mattress retailers.

Fitness / Workout Gear

If you have been lax on your New Year’s resolution to get in shape for the beach, you have our permission to wait one more month. Big-box and fitness retailers will be clearing out old products during June, hence you will find discounts that match January’s clearance events.

What to Buy Instead: Camping Gear / Sneakers. If you really want to burn some calories, how about hiking up a trail and camping out for a night? May is the absolute best time to find sales on camping equipment, usually ranging from 30% to 80% depending on the product. We are also seeing amazing sales on Nike gear from stores like Finish Line and general sneaker sales on eBay.
