Square Enix is hitting it hard with its Play Arts Figures line-up. What started as a couple compelling new takes on DC heroes and Star Wars mainstays has blossomed into a verified business arm of the video game publisher. Latest to go under the knife are those headliner Marvel heroes we know and love, and not without the quirky tweaks we’ve come to expect from the Play Arts line.

Iron Man – August 31

Iron Man trades in any semblence of silver for a decidedly more bad-ass onyx look. This figure, in particular, highlights the toy line’s propensity for displaying action and motion. Pull out flaps on the back of the suit or throw on palm or feet jet emissions, as pictured, to set up a more photogenic pose. Head to Square Enix’s website to pre-order and see more shots.

Spider-Man – October 15

This one comes with a number of different web options, in addition to replaceable hands for the varied holding of said webs. Like Iron Man, Spidey gets a smattering of black infused with his iconic red and blue. He also seems to have dabbled in mascara for this particularl look. Spider-Man is also going for $120. Thor – October 31

For whatever reason Square Enix’s Thor figure is listed at $150. Maybe it’s the exceedingly intricate lightening prop. Maybe it’s those big, beautiful muscles. Probably it’s the cape. In any case, the Norse God runs high, but boasts just as much, if not more, detail than any figure in the line.

Venom – November 21

Marvel isn’t known for its villains in the same way DC is, but if you’re going to keep one slot open for the bad guys then Venom isn’t a bad choice to fill it. Opposing Spider-Man with a grotesque mania, Square Enix seems to have emphasized as much as it can the unhinged nature of the character. He’s $130. Here’s the listing.

Captain America

Square Enix just this week revealed Captain America, so there isn’t a listing, price or release date for the figure yet. There are pictures though (thanks, Polygon). At the core of the Captain America character is his almost innocent devotion to principle, which is how I justify the boyish face Square Enix went with. More importantly, he’s got his trusty shield.

It’s easy to look past the Stormtroopers of the Star Wars universe with your nose tipped up, an expectation of buffoonery and inadequacy brimming from your nostrils. They’re essentially space lemmings, even worse so than the droids due to their supposed conscience. Choice is a funny thing. This Stormtrooper Star Wars figure, for instance, chose to be an insane badass that could probably take down an armada of Republic forces all by himself.

Square Enix, normally a maker of video games and other related media, is starting up line of variant Star Wars  figures. Back in December the company revealed the first of the set, a Darth Vader with a certain Japanese warrior lean. He’s due out sometime in May for about $100, according to The Toyark.

The Stormtrooper, on the other hand, is due out in July at the same price point, as is this variant Boba Fett.

It seems if you were already a ruthless and feared individual, you need a ragged cape to up your game. The Stormtroopers, on the other hand, just needed to get that dopey expression off their collective faces.

At 11 inches tall apiece, each figure comes with a number of accessories. According to The Toyark, “The Boba Fett will include interchangeable hands, a heavy blast, a pistol, knives, flamethrower effect, jetpack effects and a figure stand. The Stormtrooper will come with interchangeable hands, a heavy blaster, a blaster pistol, a pistol effect piece and a figure stand.”

The Dark Vader figure “features numerous accessories including a lightsaber, a lightsaber with movement effect, interchangeable hands, a left hand with a special effect, and a figure stand.”

While Star Wars figures are nothing new, we’ve been seeing an uptick in superhero-related products in the past few years. I’m sure you can guess why. Just last month we ran a piece on some sweet Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron figures from Kotobukiya and Hot Toys, in anticipation of the upcoming film.

Stormtrooper, code name ‘Come At Me Bro’, reporting for duty

The film itself might not hit theaters until May 1, 2015, but that doesn’t mean the Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron merchandising train can’t fill in its coal and get those pistons pumping. Indeed, we featured the LEGO Avenger’s Helicarrier not too long ago, which, while based on the first Avengers film, will no doubt see interest due to the upcoming reunion of Marvel’s favorite heroes. To follow suit are those deliciously detailed figures and figurines that accompany any major fantasy release.

The first, and most impressive, is a duet of battling frenemies, Iron Man in his Hulkbuster suit and, of course, the Hulk raging out on each other, from the sculptors at Kotobukiya. Marvel revealed these guys through its website.

As separate purchases they’ll be impressive enough, but together it’s quite the striking image, the details and proportions drawn directly out of the first trailers for Age of Ultron.

Kotobukiya’s figures are among the most intricately designed, especially with an aim to recreate with exact detail the events of the trailer, but Hot Toys is taking a bit of a different, more stylized route. Dubbed the Artist Mix Collection series, Hot Toys is collaborating with different design companies to combine the style of an originating inspiration and that of its designer’s particular take. For Avengers: Age of Ultron, Hot Toys is collaborating with Touma, out of Japan, for a series of pretty cool bobbleheads. Most notably, this line is getting ahead of the Ultron game with three representations of that character.

Hot Toys also has its own hyper-realistic line-up for Avengers: Age of Ultron, actually detailing the faces of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers within their respective suits.
