^ It's an investment for them to increase the user base familiar with their Win10 GUI in an effort to make them more comfortable with purchasing mobile devices running some form of Windows.
Giving it to users currently running pirated copies has since been clarified by MS as being poorly worded or interpreted.
Win10 will do an in place upgrade to a pirated (aka non-genuine) installation of Win7 or 8, but will not be genuine itself including the same, or possibly even more issues faced by non-genuine Win7 and 8 users.
Humorous that some people can only "understand" that Windows 10 is free for a year means that they will have to pay every year thereafter. Biggest problem with our society = limited understand / knowledge and a growing inability to rationally think. The downside of our electronic frontier.
You have 1 year to claim your free upgrade. If you choose not to upgrade within the 1 year period you will have to buy the software. That is what it means. This has never been explained to be a subscription.
The reason they would like for you to upgrade is that it reduces the number of OS's they must support to hopefully 1. This reduces their staffing requirements and streamlines troubleshooting. They are also planning to roll out an "APP" store for this new pool of users to buy "APPS."
Their announced plan is to just keep upgrading Windows 10 as a long term operating system without ever doing the whole new windows thing again. They are taking this from the phone industry that has been the same for a very long time, but updated regularly.
Developing a new windows takes time and costs a lot of money. In the case of some of their failures - they never got that money back and it ended up costing them market share.
I guess I was mistaken with my initial comment. I just couldn't see MS giving an OS away for nothing, but that seems to be exactly what they are doing for 2 reasons. One is engaging pirated users (as indicated above) and two to get rid of the older versions out there as quickly as possible to reduce maintenance costs. Kudos to MS
Figured I just had to jump in on this one too :D....
I think Microsoft is going the route of Apple, where everything has to be fed through the App Store. This will ensure MS generates revenue from application sales, which will in turn be more profitable to MS as they will not need to generate revenue from the sale of Windows, only from the paid applications purchased through the store for Windows.
People don't like change, I use 8.1 on occasion and have no issues with it...people can't get XP out of their mind81 I think runs great, 10 preview I have running runs even better btw...
I have 8,1 Pro on one of my machines (with Classic Shell). Works great. Will stay with my Windows 7 Pro on my other hardware for awhile to see how Windows 10 performs.
I will say its nice that they will allow for a clean install of widows 10 from my windows 7 But free is not the cost here 10 comes with a price and that price is privacy. But its a nice tool if used right but we all know it will not always be used in the right.....
What this is really about is converting billions of devices into a stealthy bitcoin miner botnet integrated at OS level. It's brilliant. You will mine bitcoins for them and you will like it.
Yes, free! This upgrade offer is for a full version of Windows 10, not a trial. 3GB download required; standard data rates apply. To take advantage of this free offer, you must upgrade to Windows 10 within one year of availability. Once you upgrade, you have Windows 10 for free on that device.
From the above sounds like a good deal. I understand they are hoping to kill off old pirated copies of their earlier OS and then get them to upgrade down the road. Sort of clear the decks especially in China and Asia where its all pirated.
It was always the case that pirates weren't getting a free upgrade. It may install but it's not "legit" and subject to revocation just like the prior pirated install.
So I give up the 7 or 8.1 that I have already gotten by whatever means and upgrade to Windows 10, deal with all the incompatibility issues, drivers, etc, so I can find out next year how much Microsoft wants to charge me?
Read carefully. You're getting FREE upgrade within a year, not FREE use for a year. If you upgrade within first year it's yours forever...
Hi, I have three W7 systems that I upgraded to W8.1 and was able to reserve W10 on 2 of them but I am unable to do so on my Lenovo W7 Laptop (that is running W8.1). I don't see the Windows icon on the taskbar, which appeared on the 2 other systems that happened to be HP and Dell Desktops, although I updated the Lenovo Laptop so that no more updates appear when I click on Windows Update which I did on the other 2 systems before "seeing" the Windows10 icon. I realize that W10 will be available in less than a week but would like to have MS beginning loading W10 on my system (as it appears it is doing on the other 2 systems being that they advise me that they need to reboot almost everyday) and would appreciate if someone could steer me in the right direction instead of just waiting for July 29?
Thanks
Bob

I'll stick with CP/M.
