got it in the mail yesterday, it won't connect. Alexa does not find it. I have my Echo dot sitting two feet away.

I believe you need an
Amazon
device (or another brand that works) with a "Hub", such as the "Echo (4th Gen) with smart home hub". Check your device specs to see if it has a hub.

This is quite a questionable policy on the part of
Amazon
, that is requiring an item on sale be ordered with Alexa. It automatically leaves out those who do not wish to use Alexa or participate in the use in such devices for personal reasons. It is nothing more or less than coercion by policy to foist such services as Alexa on the public whether they want it or not; and if the shopping public do not choose to allow such devices into their home and have their freedom to choose and have their privacy undermined slowly but surely, they are to be refused product or service by default. It was just recently in national news that such a device as Alexa was hacked and a child was addressed by the voice of a stranger in the privacy of their own bedroom -- how terrifying it must have been and how evil on the part of the perpetrator. Some consumers do not wish to place Alexa-type devises in their home for this and other reasons of privacy and safety concerns. This idea of offering sales on products to some and not others if they don't choose to join in is not only bad business, but regressive in terms of making shopping for goods and services available to every American. It is a market ploy that may win you a few new Alexa subscribers, but may aslo leave a bad taste in the mouth of many American shoppers and create bad will between
Amazon
and those who love their freedoms. Overall, bad idea.
