Are these safe to use? I've heard Seagate drives aren't the best when it comes to reliability, at least their consumer drives. Would it be better to spend more on WD Red drives?

Yes. It would be better to buy any other brand. Which are Toshiba or WD. I wouldn't take a Seagate if they were giving them away.
