It's really never mentioned in the ads, but people should note that most of the time the refurbs have IR remotes. From the factory, this model and many others have wifi remotes that do not need to be pointed directly at the ROKU, but when they are refurbished they get a cheaper IR remote. The IR remote will typically not work if you mount the roku behind a wall mounted TV or even across a large room. The give away is usually to look for headphones. If the remote has headphones it's probably not the cheap IR replacement. This may not sound like a big deal, but the IR remote really is finicky and sometimes I need to walk across the room and hold the remote right by the box to get it to work.
Roku is a conduit for channels. Channels deliver ads. So go fire up the Hulu channel on Roku, pay Hulu the $11.99 for ad free viewing and, congratulations, no more ads
