I already have a gas detector. When a propane fitter came to my house with a detector, he said it showed no leaks. I insisted I could smell propane. Eventually he coated the equipment with detergent and saw bubbles. Score 1 for my nose.
Next time with a different propane fitter I reported a smell around my outside propane tank. Again the detection equipment failed to detect any problem although both my and the propane fitters noses could smell an issue. The hairline crack in the fitting near the valve was the problem. Lastly, I told a friend I could smell a gas leak while walking on her driveway. She said she had no gas service at her house. I persisted. She called the local gas company whose detector AGAIN found nothing. They eventually dug up her driveway and found a gas pipe that was capped off but was leaking due to years of rust.
Summary: trust your nose.
