The one thing that always puzzled me was, stainless steel in bulk is about $0.46/lb, so it would take maybe 12 cents worth of additional stainless steel to make the 8" version of a caliper, yet manufacturers charge upwards of 50% more for an 8" over 6".
What is the Very Valuable Thing people are willing to pay a premium for measuring that's larger than 6" but no larger than 8"?
