Multiple locks, each requiring a different key, ar attached to the various holes around the lid. The individual keys are then given to different people so that no one person can ever open the box alone. Until all approved parties participate in the great unlocking, the contents of the box remain unaccessible. The exact same principle is used in data cryptography as well.
