Definitely solidifying his place in the Hall of Fame of Amazing Fathers, David LaFerriere has been drawing illustrations on his kids’ clear, plastic sandwich bags since 2008. Basically a fun surprise when they popped open their lunchboxes at school each day, the creative graphic designer used a Sharpie to draw robots, food, animals, fun objects and a ridiculous number of monster variations that put the Pixar team who worked on Monsters University to shame.

In an interview with Mashable, LaFerriere said, “I used to work nights at a newspaper, and I’d be up early in the morning making my kids sandwiches. I started drawing on the baggies, sort of as a way to channel my creative juices in the morning, and it just ended up sticking.” LaFerriere started his illustrations when both of his boys were in elementary school, but has continued since both sons still enjoy checking out the illustrations each day in middle school and high school.

To promote a new series called The Secret Life Of…, the British cable channel Yesterday commissioned graphic artists to update portraits of popular historical figures in order to depict what the personages pictured might look like if they lived in the 21st century. You are free to imagine an accident with a time machine, a deal with the devil that granted immortality or perhaps just a bizarre hiccup in the universe.

Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) was seriously wounded in the 1797 Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and lost most of his right arm, so in the 21st century, he has a modern prosthetic limb.

Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603) looks like she should be presiding over a meeting of a board of directors, rather than ruling over the British Empire.

Meanwhile, King Henry VIII (1491-1547) could have portrayed David Brent in the original version of The Office, instead of Ricky Gervais.

You’ve heard of Brooklyn hipsters? Meet Stratford hipster William Shakespeare (1564-1616); not pictured is the MacBook on which he writes his plays in the corner of the local coffee shop.

Finally, Marie Antoinette (1755-1793) looks like she might well be out every night with Paris and Nicky Hilton.

That Modern Look: What Historical Figures Would Look Like Today

Detailed in a blog post on Shutterstock, the designers at the stock photo site envisioned what items best represent the main characters within AMC’s Mad Men and compared the 21st-century equivalent of each one. For instance, if Christina Hendricks’ Joan Harris was carrying a notepad in the 1960’s, she would probably be carrying around an iPad Mini in this decade.

Mad Men recently returned to AMC for a sixth season, continuing to detail the lives of an ad agency in the 1960s. After this season, the show will only continue for one more season before wrapping up completely.

With 50 years between the two time periods, they asked themselves how Don Draper, Peggy Olsen, Joan Harris, Pete Campbell, Roger Sterling and Betty Francis (formerly Betty Draper) would interact with tech gadgets and 2013 trends. Check out the minimal concepts below:
