Ebay is highlighting a number of discounted items through tomorrow (Feb. 17) as part of its Presidents Day event. While the items on the list run the gamut of top products throughout the site, there seems to be a pretty heavy emphasis on home appliances, maintenance and cooking.

Post-Christmas deals aren’t much of a new thing. For a couple of days, retailers become the world’s most efficient recycling bin, taking in all the unwanted gifts and hashing them out as quickly as humanly possible. Looking for a way to encourage more product discovery when searching through the site, eBay has rolled out a new service for users called Collections. Featuring products picked out by celebrity and expert curators, these collections are presented to the user in the web design style made popular by Pinterest. Users can also follow the actual collections or curators in order to keep track of recently added items.

Some of eBay’s expert curators include photographers Billy Farrell and Todd Selby, singer-songwriters Solange Knowles and Pharrell Williams, designer and blogger Joy Cho, writer Kelly Oxford, and watch collector Benjamin Clymer. Of course, eBay users can also start their own collections and gain followers within the community.

Collections is likely a move to compete more directly with Amazon’s extremely similar functionality also called Collections as well as bringing in more social traffic from networks like Facebook and Twitter to eBay’s site. eBay also recently announced the expansion of the eBay Now local delivery service, basically a program that offers delivery within an hour of purchase in select cities. That competes directly with Amazon’s same-day delivery service.

To celebrate the launch of Collections, eBay is offering up $25,000 to anyone who wants to share an eBay collection on their Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest account. To enter the sweeps, all you need to do is visit the main Collections page and share a collection before December 31, 2013. The grand prize will be deposited directly into the winner’s Paypal account after the sweeps closes out. Users also have the opportunity to win $1,000 weekly prizes through the end of the year.

eBay Launches Pinterest-esque Collections to Showcase Users, Products

Listed on eBay this week, an extremely rare Bioshock audio diary went up for sale likely timed with the release of the popular Bioshock Infinite. Only four of these devices were distributed by the developers of the Bioshock series and required participation in an elaborate, puzzle “There’s Something In The Sea” alternate reality game. By sending letters to the mailing addresses listed on the game site, players would receive packages delivered by men dressed in 1950’s uniforms.

However, four players were given a telegraph and a letter listing a nearby location to visit as well as a time and a date. When the player arrived at the storage facility, they were greeted by an actor that quizzed them on a secondary puzzle that was included.

Assuming they were able to answer all questions correctly, they were able to listen to an actual audio diary modeled after the diaries within Bioshock and Bioshock 2. While not all players were able to keep the audio diary, the eBay seller had driven for ten hours to get to the storage facility and the 2K games rep allowed him to keep the working model.

According to the details of the auction, the eBay seller put up the rare Bioshock audio dairy for sale to help with some financial issues. At this time, the auction value has increased to $2,600 and will end in approximately two days. You can listen to the recording on the diary below:
