To promote a new series called The Secret Life Of…, the British cable channel Yesterday commissioned graphic artists to update portraits of popular historical figures in order to depict what the personages pictured might look like if they lived in the 21st century. You are free to imagine an accident with a time machine, a deal with the devil that granted immortality or perhaps just a bizarre hiccup in the universe.

Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) was seriously wounded in the 1797 Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and lost most of his right arm, so in the 21st century, he has a modern prosthetic limb.

Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603) looks like she should be presiding over a meeting of a board of directors, rather than ruling over the British Empire.

Meanwhile, King Henry VIII (1491-1547) could have portrayed David Brent in the original version of The Office, instead of Ricky Gervais.

You’ve heard of Brooklyn hipsters? Meet Stratford hipster William Shakespeare (1564-1616); not pictured is the MacBook on which he writes his plays in the corner of the local coffee shop.

Finally, Marie Antoinette (1755-1793) looks like she might well be out every night with Paris and Nicky Hilton.

The only problem with the above portrait is that we’ve already seen what Marie Antoinette would look like in the 21st century (pink Converse high-tops not pictured):

The Beijing Olympics were a long time ago. With no opening ceremonies to practice for, Chinese citizens have instead found something new to do: take photographs of their dogs wearing pantyhose.

Known as “gou gou chuan siwa” in Chinese, the movement can be traced back to this photo, posted to the social network Weibo early in April:

Numerous others have followed, some with fancy footwear:

And some dogs are apparently divas who demand additional accessories:

At first glance, this may not seem much different from putting a sweater or a hat on a dog, but because of how dogs recognize each other, it’s actually the equivalent of forcing a ski mask onto a human.

Nothing Beats Two Great Pairs of Legs

Because one drone strike can ruin your whole day, New York-based designer Adam Harvey has created what he calls the “anti-drone hoodie,” currently on display at a London exhibit titled “Stealth Wear.”

Actually, the real concern isn’t military drones, it’s surveillance drones operated by law enforcement and private companies — some estimates say that there will be 20,000 of those in the skies over the U.S. within 15 years. The hoodie is made using metallic threads, and it’s supposed to reflect heat, thereby hiding the wearer from the thermal imaging spy cameras on all these drones.

It’s also extremely fashionable, as seen in this concept art from Harvey’s site:

While it may look like it wouldn’t offer any camouflage against a midriff-seeking drone, that apparently doesn’t matter; as devoted tinfoil-hat wearers will tell you, it’s most important to protect the head.
