It can, but then you need to build partitions around it to seal off the rest of the window opening, or else it pulls a lot less air through and out, or in, instead of also making a short loop where it intakes a significant % of the air it just exhausted.

If you have gaps and run it at night, insects will be attracted to light in the room and come indoors. A screen helps but if it has gaps too, they'll manage to get in. Most effective is one that comes with a pair of blocking partition panels AND to use tape and plastic or whatever to seal all gaps.

If your window needs to be further open because the box fan is a lot taller, then this can also increase the risk of rain coming in. Combine these two factors and it can be a lot less convenient to put the fan in and take it out as the need arises.

I've never tried one of these squirrel cage fan types but have had reasonable success with the more tradition dual axial fan type, but there are two types of motors in those and generally the ones that are electronically reversible, have superior PSC motors that will last longer before the bearings are shot, compared to the split pole motors in those that have to be flipped around in the window frame to be "reversed".

Does NOT work with smart plugs or outlets.

The fan itself is fine. Moves a decent amount of air and is compact.

What sucks about the fan is that there is only ONE way to turn it on. You must physically push the on button. It has NO remote either. And it always defaults to the medium setting when you turn it on. So you have no options to schedule the fan to come on at certain times.
