I see stories weekly about "stop using this adapter" "oh if you don't use a manufacturer supplied adapter it could void your warranty".

^ I'd imagine that falls under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, that they can't void the warranty due to using 3rd party equipment UNLESS they can demonstrate it was a direct contributor to whichever subsystem is faulty.
