These days, the suit is often the last item of clothing purchased by men. Namely because men simply don’t wear suits all the time anymore. Unless he’s heading to a formal office environment or some form of special event, the typical American male shuns the suit these days.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t own a suit or even multiple suits. Here are four reasons why:

You know this if you’ve ever tried on a suit. There’s a split second where you glance in the mirror and think about blurting out your best James Bond impersonation. Probably Connery, definitely not Dalton. But really, the imagination starts to run wild when you put on that suit. Agent 47, a Secret Service agent, perhaps one of the Men in Black. All it takes is the right suit.

Unless You are a Friendless Shut-In, Special Occasions Require a Suit

There are five places where you need to wear a suit. Weddings, Funerals, Job Interviews, Legal Proceedings or Upscale Restaurants when on a date. Granted, you could probably get away with casual dress clothes at some of these events depending on the locale, but it never hurts to throw on a suit. No one is going to besmirch you for dressing up too much. You may, however, get a few disapproving stares if you aren’t dressed up enough.

Special Treatment is Often Offered When Wearing a Suit

If you haven’t noticed, you will be treated differently when wearing a suit. The airport is the most obvious place where this happens. Decades ago, people would get dressed up in a suit to fly. However, that’s not the case anymore. When you’re wearing a suit while traveling by air, the gate attendants, flight crew and passengers take notice. This can often lead to more gracious treatment and small perks. The same thing happens when checking into a hotel, when shopping or when out at restaurant / bars.
