The Deal Dozen: Week of August 15, 2014

With summer now officially underway (and of course the World Cup and Wimbledon), we saw some a good number of deals on home/outdoor products as well as apparel and shoes this week, plus a great but short-lived sale on new Macbook Pros on eBay.

We’ve been seeing more 3D printers on Ben’s, and there was a modest discount on the MakerBot Replicator 5th Generation 3D printer. Expect to see more aggressive price drops on 3D printers over the course of the year.

For you gamers, the $350 sale price on the PlayStation 4 continues at eBay, as does the great Steam Summer Sale through June 30th. There’s also a series of DRM-free flash sales going on at GoG.com.

Deals of the Week (June 27): New Deals, Please

Blasting through a funding goal of $375,000 as of today, a company called New Matter will be building an end-to-end 3D printer for consumers that will allow people to share designs with others.

While 3D printers are definitely a cool, burgeoning technology, even the early basic models have been cost prohibitive and priced between $500 to $5,000 depending on the size of the device.

Fortunately, the MOD-t will be debuting at a $249 price point. That’s $50 cheaper than the M3D Micro 3D printer that launched on Kickstarter last month, definitely more attractive to budget-minded consumers. The device is approximately 16 inches by 12 inches by 15 inches tall and a clear, removable cover allows the owner to view the object that’s being printed.

Of course, printing times are significantly longer with these, less expensive smaller 3D printers. Depending on the object’s size and complexity, the printer may take between 30 minutes to six hours to compete a design. However, the software allows users to print designs that will be available on an app store of sorts. In addition, that software can be accessed from devices like tablets and print commands can be sent over the built-in Wi-Fi.

Conceptually, the company is attempting to remove the roadblocks that are preventing the average consumer from printing 3D objects. If you are interested in funding the project and receiving your own MOD-t 3D printer, you can find the Indiegogo project here. In addition to the printer, you will receive a 0.5 kg spool of filament and access to the New Matter store and software apps. The printer is expected to ship during April 2015.

Shut Up and Take My Money: New Matter MOD-t 3D Printer

The 3D printer is, like, the coolest thing ever. Really.

3D printers are controversial, too, which naturally ratchets up their coolness vibe. Yes, they can make real guns (Brazilians love it), but they still can’t make building bricks as good as LEGOs. Go figure.

Now here are nine of the most awesome uses of a 3D printer… so far. And, I promise, no iPhone cases on this list—the world has enough of those!

1. Gastronomic Delights

Like the food machine in The Jetsons, the 3D printer uses raw ingredients to create cool-looking food. Let’s hope the operators are wearing hairnets.

Yes, that is a miniature space shuttle made of scallops.

2. Model Cars

This 1:3 scale model of James Bond’s signature Aston Martin DB5 was made by a 3D printer, then blown up in Skyfall.

3. Musical Instruments

Music demands unique voices and even more unique, um, spider guitars.

4. Clothing

In addition to food, the 3D printer can provide other basic needs. It just may be clothing you’ll never wear. Ever.

You have not lived until you’ve been seen flossin’ on your 3D-printed ride.

6. 3D Photos

3D Photo Booths are here. (Guess where. Yeah, Japan.) You can be made into a little action figure. And… this technology will soon be horribly, horribly corrupted.
