Back in July at San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. debuted the first footage of next year’s Mad Max: Fury Road, a defiantly CGI-less, apocalyptic return for the franchise’s original creator, George Miller. That trailer took the film’s wanton vehicular violence in a somber and desperate direction, somewhat in line with how an advertiser might assume what a millennial would expect out of his or her end-of-the-world summer blockbuster. Fast-forward to this week and you’ve got something altogether different in tone and outlook, albeit constructed with much the same footage as before. It’s the music, above all else, that sets it apart. It’s also Nicholas Hoult’s confused, painted face that reminds us what kind of universe we’re really in. Here’s The Guardians of the Galaxy version of Mad Max: Fury Road:

Considering George Miller’s past projects, it’s likely the final product will fall somewhere in the middle, camping the edge between insane and ridiculous in the best way possible. Still, we’ll always be graced with this one revelation, time and time again.
