^ ?? Most internet providers provide a modem-router hybrid that might have minimal wifi capabilities built in, maybe free for the first year as a promo then at about $10 per month.

Your service providers will not give you the control you need for most basic home users who do gaming or have some VPN needs. You can't prioritize data streams. This means you will have lags and other issues. I don't even use the service providers modems because the cost of buying one. I've purchased even the one from the service providers when cable internet was first ever available. Best investment ever. I got the V1 version and I flashed it with DDWRT and now I'm loving it. I did not like the original firmware on it, clunky and confusing.
