Just a gimmick. Engineered to run much hotter than the bulb can handle to produce brighter light, and then subsequently burn out far too soon. Hence the reason people replace them once or twice a year as opposed to never on a 10+ year old car. Some say it's worth it though. A proper quality headlight conversion, LED for projector housings or HID for reflector housings are under $200.
