To MWplus3: I've had the older 560 Roomba for years. I'm on my second one. I love having them and don't pull out the standard vacuum very often. They last for about 4 years in my house and the parts start to wear out. We do expect a lot of ours though so they might be better in a gentler environment. I have two young boys & 3 cats. They're all in & out all the time. They're not cheap. I don't know what the newer versions really offer to me, so I keep buying the older version and then have rebuilt my second one with parts from the first when I needed too. They're not effortless you have to empty the filter. Set it in the place you want to get clean. etc. I place mine in an area before I leave the house everyday and it's good for me. It keeps the dirt down and I run it everyday. My friend hated hers because it didn't give her that completely clean/vacuum tracks sort of feeling that you get after a weekly vacuuming. You have to decide if you prefer an active (traditional) or passive (roomba-type) cleaning.
I own a basic model roomba we bought at sams 2 years ago. It is nice to have clean floors and it does its job BUT I was shocked that the tech hasn’t really seemed to evolve much since 2002. I figured by now for the price it would be able map a home remember an efficient route , maybe sense obstacles, adapt to changes and be more durable and robust. It still just blindly bumps around the house randomly for several hours , it’s loud,it loses its run schedule often, it gets stuck under things, and it clogs up fast with hair balls on wheels and spinners. I haven’t looked into a rebuild kit for it but it’s been 2.5years and It needs a rebuild or needs to be replaced possibly- would I buy again yes but with much more realistic expectations of it not being a cool tech smart gadget and mostly just an automated dust mop that takes loud hours to perform a 30min once over.
My big complaint about these is that you have to move all your chairs up out of the way for it to clean under tables and counters. It would be nice to for them to solve that problem.
I encouraged a friend to buy one and those guys love it. It picks up the dog hair, but it does get stuck at times and needs help getting back to the base. I’d love to have one...
