I gave Freedompop a try and didn't have a good experience. Customer support is very difficult to get and slow to respond and they charge you additional fees for almost every little service you get bundled for free with every other carrier. Service is also very unreliable so for me the additional hassle wasn't worth the savings. I have Xfinity mobile for $12 a month for 1GB of data and unlimited talk and text with a $1 LG X Charge and I'm not forced to jump through the hoops, pay extra for things like voicemail and phone support and deal with the shotty service I was getting from Freedompop anymore.
FreedomPop uses Sprint so check opensignal.com before buying to make sure you will have coverage as Sprint isn't exactly the highest-rated of the 4 carriers.
Also be aware that cancelling FreedomPop is nearly impossible and they will argue with you when you try.
FreedomPop is tricky, but if you manage to disable all the services, downgrade to the free plan, and never use it for voice communications (too laggy), it's awesome. I don't even subscribe to cable or DSL anymore because they got so damn overpriced. FreedomPop has been a fantastic way to stay minimally connected without paying an arm and a leg.
