Steep for reference considering it could been had for $550 16 mo's ago a 5% drop now, + game is nothing! Would say $470 (that's just 15% from a original MSRP).

I think 980's have merit like this Asus STRIX for $470 -AR $30, although $10 ship kills it...

Considering the 390X (1050Mhz) is a perfectly matched to a reference 980 although 35% less! As you can get this XFX 390X 8Gb for $340 -AR$30 while figuring in there's a $20 promotional gift card w/purchase w/FS.

Here tests this XFX 390X and the reference 980. With Nvidia centric titles and GameWerk features-HBHO turned on...

Yeah Reference is boss but keep it only for Nvidia GTX 970 and 770 Titan Cooler.. otherwise that's way too expensive.

you can overclock the GTX 970 a little and be the same performance.

Though the first decent 970 built for good OC'n is still like $320 and a $30 rebate. And there some easy/meaningful OC left in the XFX 390X. A 1150Mhz Core/1625Mhz memory is not even hard, while produces profound traction.
