I've gotten the ant set from Uncle Milton before and like it. It's the only 'toy' that stops my 5 year old daughter from talking incessantly. They are harvester ants -- large, but hardly giant. They are smaller than carpenter ants.
The ants will last from 1-3 months, depending on if they are fed properly and how many times your kids shake the farm. Typically, they die off one at a time over weeks, and it's fun to watch the other ones bury their dead under piles of sand or gel. I prefer the gel colony as the gel has the food and water built in. The gel colonies are more expensive, and I'll wait until the black Friday specials again.
