How can some TV's (55" + 4k) go for this low while the brands like samsung / LG / sony sell theirs for $1-2K+? I mean I get that the internals will be cheapend out for brands like TCL and Hisense etc... but is the difference as large as the price gap?
While they price is nice, the 4 Series always seems to be missing a lot of features I look for (like Dolby Vision HDR). You usually need a 6 Series for features like that.

the quality of the panels on LG/Samsung/Sony are second to none. New LG G2 are amazing, but expensive.

It's a great TV for a kids room, this is a refresh of the same model I brought last year around the same price. It looks good, has decent smart TV functions, and can't be beat for the price. All the other features you might be looking for, like high refresh rate, better brightness/darkess, etc. will only be found in a more premium TV.
This series are some of the best lower-end TVs. Picture quality rivals or beats the (non-OLED) TVs in those other brands in my opinion. Though this is slightly older. No Dolby HDR is regrettable.
Has the non 4K version of this. Enjoyed it while it lasted. Started failing (blinking) after about 4 1/2 years. Back lighting LED strips was the issue. Dealt with it for a while then tossed it. Would probably buy another at this price.
Last I heard, TCL (CSoT) makes the panels for Samsung. Apparently Samsung sold all of their 2000+ patents to them and no longer manufacture them. Not sure on the other guts though.
TCL televisions are actually fantastic for the price. Mine has been reliable although I did have one fail. The key here is make sure you buy the extended warranty at At that price the warranty for like 3 years should only be maybe 25 or 30 bucks. Covers your **** in case there is a problem.
This is a good secondary TV (like for an exercise room) but if you're going to spend a lot of time with it, I'd hold out for the 5 series (or 6 series)
