The "external desktop" hard drive are not as good as they used to be. The last one I bought from Seagate (but I think other brands are similar) have a built-in USB port instead of an internal SATA - USB adapter. The downside is that you can't use the drive in a NAS if you want to later on. Also, they don't seem to be as sturdy - the head of the one I had did not park properly when powered off and damaged the platters = complete loss of data. I wouldn't store 8 TB of valuable data on one of these. Spend more and buy an internal HDD + separate USB case.

I have 10 of these now and because of the USB hub, I can daisy chain up to 6+ of them, all at USB 3.0 speeds.
