Living in southern CA almost all the “jackets” you see are thin and just for looks. My first REI jacket was the first real jacket I ever owned. Still holds up and still the warmest thing I own.
honestly, REI private label is well worth the price. Essentially a Columbia/North Face. Wouldn't put it on the same level as Marmot or Patagonia, but it's still an awesome private label. The Kirkland brand of private label down jackets.

Good jacket (great down), good price, great company. If you need a down jacket, this is a no brainer. If you can't get to an REI store to try one on, the REI return/exchange policy is excellent and shouldn't be a concern.
