Unless a container tis size has a built in vacuum pump it is not really air-tight. Everytime you open the lid you are exposing the contents to air and oxidation. Better than a large container such as this is to store large pet food bags in several smaller zip lock type bags and then freeze if possible. This way you only expose the food you are using at the moment and not the entire contents everytime you feed.
or... just keep on storing the pet food in its original bag and not worry. your pet could care less if the food is not as fresh as the day the bag was opened... as long as it ain't moldy, it's good. like an old bag of pretzels
