Why would you open a chair box unless you are going to use it? Yep, it's a chair alright. It's either used or it isn't. "Open Box" is usually defined as opened to see color, style, etc., and the packaging may be different. It needs to wiped, functionality tested, etc. If not, that makes it renewed, refurbed or whatever. That's why they have demos for things like chairs.

i mean if you don't like it and it cost you $800 you might want a refund for a chair you like better? I sent a $350 chair back earlier this year and got one i love.

Herman Miller sued MadisonSeating for giving the impression that its refurbished Herman Miller furniture is new.

But at that point it is used, even lightly, and should be sold as such.

Well in this case this listing clearly states open box. Does that not imply used? I guess I'm not too naive to think it was opened and shut...clearly it means it was "tried out" then discarded. Lol that's what open box is boss

Could mean the box was damaged in shipping and they pulled it out to make sure there was no damage, or could mean they're just making them faster than they're selling them so as long as they still make a profit, they can divert some stock to alternate channels as "open box" and not devalue their retail price point as much.

Isn't this cheaper directly on the Madison Seating website?

From their website: https://www.madisonseating.com/terms-of-use.html

Open box is very likely used...

"Open Box" simply means that the item has been removed from its original packaging. The chair was returned, refurbished, reconditioned, reupholstered or the price has been reduced due to an overstock of open box inventory.

Pretty smarmy

These Chairs are really nice but from working in I.T. for 20+ years I can tell you my Back prefers Steelcase over Heramn Miller.

You can be uncomfortable (and stylish?) for far less.
