I can't really say how Apple continually improves the camera in the XS, but since the Pixel's greatest strength is in software and more specifically in AI, the recent "Night Sight" camera update that Google pushed out to not only the Pixel 3, but also the 1st gen Pixel and Pixel 2 shows how much care is taken to present and past phones.
There is a CRUCIAL distinction here: the 24-month statement credit is ONLY with Verizon. If you buy the phone from Best Buy (by either upgrading a Verizon line or getting a new one), you get the $400 credit up front directly from Best Buy with no wait for future credits.
The distinction is important because either way you'll still have 24 months of $16.66 payments to make to Verizon. If you decide to pay off that balance early, if you buy through Best Buy you effectively got the $400 credit when you bought the phone so that's it. But if you bought it from Verizon, you no longer get any statement credits.
Bottom line: buy from Best Buy and you can pay off the phone any time and walk away from Verizon if you want to. Buy from Verizon, and you're basically stuck for 24 months while waiting for the credits to show up.
