^ It does work but in some cases, especially if it rains before wind blows the leaves off, you may still have to get up there and clean the stuck on leaves off. At the same time, with them not down IN the gutter, they dry out faster instead of creating a wad of muck at the downspout.
They are not as effective at guarding against things smaller than leaves, like spanish moss or helicopter seeds from maple trees. I mean they still help but these smaller particles can get stuck or down inside more, and if you do get a wad of muck at the downspout from those, would have to take the guard out to get rid of them, though the moss usually disintegrates after a rain or two if not a massive amount.
