FYI the Ecobee3 w/3 remote sensors is available at Costco (in-store and online) for $199.
has a chart comparing the feature list of the 4 with the 3, and it looks like if you have an older HVAC system in your house with less features (no humidifier/dehumid/etc) that the 3 might work ok for you. I've not done a serious comparison so hopefully someone in the know will chime in with better info.
Why bother? when you get home, manually set the temperature to where it needs to be. When you go to bed, change the temperature. When you leave in the morning, change the temperature.
I have resisted purchasing any of these smart thermostats because I walk right past the existing thermostat on the way in/out of the house!
Just because you can spend excess money on technology to do something does not mean that you should spend money on technology. Be sure to apply the correct technology to the problem at hand.
It's useful when you are not home to set the temperatures so that you come home to a warm or cooler house. I think that helps when the cost of utilities have gone up 3x's because PG&E is really tightening the screws on extorting money from the customers.
