^ Yes they'll need an amp, though it doesn't have to be as large and expensive as a traditional receiver. There are several amp boards on for under $20, even a few under $10, and if it doesn't need to be high wattage you could even power them from the computer 12V PSU rail, or throw into a project case, put a panel mount a DC barrel socket on the back for use with an AC-DC adapter PSU. In that case notebook power bricks tend to be a good value but may have a proprietary plug that needs swapped to a standard one.
Looking for a 2.1 system that I can 3M Red Tape speakers on the bottom edges of the monitors. Monitors are mounted on arms. Makes for a nice clean floating look. Bose got rid of the 2.1 cube speakers years ago.
