Probably because even with reasonably good storage, a steel can won't outlast that without the potential for rust getting in when opened, or the seal may fail.
Heh, imagine Augason, 29 years from now, getting an email that you bought this 29 years ago and it's past its shelf life one year too soon.
^ I'd love it if more products came in large, durable (not overly thin) plastic containers so I could reuse them for storage of other things once empty... just make the neck of the container large like their steel can, so there's a large opening. Even better, a screw top lid instead of thin snap on type.
