The $ store batts. only last ~ 2/3 as long as energizer or duracell in my experience. Ni-cad rechargeables put out less v. and the light will be dimmer.
^ Takes 4 x AA which means it has a driver circuit and rechargeables won't be any dimmer because 4 x 1.2V is still well above the LED forward voltage. Don't know why you mentioned NiCd, who buys those these days? I'd throw 4 Eneloop NiMH in it. Granted those cost more than each light does.
I use the FL8215 1/2 Watt Head Lamp found on Other than having add some to the band at the end and having to tighten up the screw from time to time. it not bad for $5 each.
