$20
New Release. Today at CES, DISH Network announced Sling TV, the streaming service that will offer 12 live cable channels including ESPN, ESPN 2 and CNN for $20 per month, with no commitments.

While not true "a la carte," it's the closest we've ever seen. In addition to the three channels above, the basic package will also include Disney Channel, TNT, TBS, ABC Family, Food Network, HGTV, Adult Swim and Cartoon Network as well as content from Maker Studios.

Sling TV will be available on multiple devices, including iOS and Android devices, Roku, Fire TV, Fire TV Stick and the Xbox One, which will be offering one free month. It's expected to debut at the end of January.

And as announced last month, HBO will launch its standalone service in April.

If this included local channels, it would be an amazing package. Without, it is an "okay" deal.

This is stupid - last time I had cable they offered a basic package pretty much just like this. This is nothing new.

Have you checked signal strength for OTA local channels? Most people that live in developed communities get a fair number of local channels that often have quality better than what cable offers.

The end is nigh. All shows now will be packaged and paid for. ESPN has gobbled up all rights to the college bowl games that used to be on ABC, CBS, FOX. Cha-ching. The local channels will just feed their best products to cable and pay packages. Free TV will be gone with the wavelength it rides on. All hope is gone.

I live in a dead zone between two major metro areas. I am in a "developed" community and yet have to pay TWC $18/mo for the broadcast channels others get for free.

^ Have you tried a roof or tower mount, motorized directional antenna (with a booster amp if the antenna cable is long)? Granted that's a fair amount of effort and expense to find out if it works well enough or not, but you could drive around checking for antennas and talking to neighbors about their solutions.

Seeing how Dish picks fights with with providers while still raising rates can we trust them? At any given moment content could be pulled. I'd go with any vendor that has this type of tech except Dish, Comcast, or Time Warner. I fear content wouldn't be consistent.

I use XBMC to stream for free. Also, I can stream my local network with XBMC. XBMC will also detect your Plex server. Install NaviX and other channels in XBMC.

Honestly, ESPN and HD local channels is the only thing keeping me on cable. Cable will be canceled in May, either way.

Give me something without ESPN and I'd be interested. Not all of us want to watch sports.

This is GREAT. Not the a la carte we've been waiting for, but I'm in Los Angeles, I've got rabbit ears and a Roku. Goodbye greedy cable & satellite oligopolies!

Whatever it takes, just put cable/satellite companies and their monopolies out of business once and for all! I cancelled my service many years ago, have saved around $3000 so far, and am better off because of doing son! Most TV is pure junk that poisons the mind and makes us even dumber than we already are!

Fewer players = less competition = higher prices

who cares. Let them charge $1000 a month for their crappy service. I will never bite ever again and do everything I can to show people how to cancel their cable and watch what they want for a smaller fee or none at all. Besides, the less TV the better. Have you looked around or listened to the constant sound bites that are repeated on a daily basis? We've become parodies of ourselves.
