For me, Plex is a mad science experiment. I've never gotten it to work reliably. I've only ever tried with the Tivo client, so perhaps that's the culprit.
Yeah, The Tivo client and some of the older gaming units (PS3) don't work very well. I am using it with Roku, iPhones and iPads and it works great!
Although, transcoding will depend heavily on the server you are using for Plex. I'm running a small ITX box with a Intel 3740QM processor and it rocks!
I've been using it for years with iPhone, iPad, Android, web and more recently the new AppleTV, and it works fantastic on all these platforms. The TiVo client is ****, and the one included with most smart TVs is not much better. For a TV, the cheapest way to go is probably the FireTV stick, and the best way to go the AppleTV 4th generation or later (one that supports third party apps)
Plex has been a savior for me with a stay at home mom and a 4 year old. We use a Xbox One with a Harmony One remote to control it and it couldnt be easier to control! I run Plex on a Lenovo TS140 Xeon server and my media is on 2x 12TB Lenovo IX4-300D NAS devices. LOVING IT!
Which os are you using milo for Pleax server ? Can you please share ITX config? Yeah, The Tivo client and some of the older gaming units (PS3) don't work very well. I am using it with Roku, iPhones and iPads and it works great!

Recently switched to Plex after years with Emby due to better Anime support, and while I still greatly prefer Emby Server + Theater over PMS + PMP in terms of UI and general metadata management, Plex's anime metadata agent and Shoko integration can't be beat..
Running i it in the background on my HTPC/Media-server/Jack-of-all-trades machine in parallel with Shoko Server, and it barely impacts performance. Having a decent video card has a greater impact than the CPU - my system runs on an old i5-2320, 32GB DDR3, 8GB RX480, a 250GB EVO 850 SSD, and 50TB worth of storage. CPU utilization rarely goes above 25-30% total unless I'm playing games, and a good chunk of that comes from ~150 open chrome tabs.
I love Plex. I have an HDHomeRun setup to record some Live TV when I am not available to watch live. I use a Nvidia Shield as the player to view all the content cause it is the best in my opinion as it is the only device capable of pass-through TrueHD and DTS-HD audio. All the other players like Roku, Fire TV and Apple TV do not. I highly recommend giving Plex a try.
Been running Plex for 4+ years now, running on a custom-built NAS. Been a great experience so far, although I wish they'd bring back PHT. Sure does beat everything else out there though, despite its faults.
Cojones if it won’t work outside of your house your firewall might not support UPNP and you must open an inbound port. When I moved from a Linksys junk to Ubiquity I learned that .!
